To debuy! Time fort another update, I’ve had a really good week so there’s lots to say! I have been working in Savelugu/Nanton district, out of their office in Pong-Tamale. Pong-Tamale is a small community about 30km north of Tamale. They have been very good about trying to get me to experience as much as possible. This week I was working directly with agricultural extension agents (AEAs) on some projects as well as with other members of the district development office staff. AEA’s are the front line workers who actually implement all the programs run by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. They work directly with communities and farmers to help them increase their agricultural productivity. One of these activities was setting up and distributing resources for demonstrations to be carried out by each of the ... read more

Hello again! So this afternoon I was watching the Ghana vs. South Africa World Cup qualifying game, like the rest of the nation, but then all of a sudden I thought, “hey, if everyone’s watching soccer, the internet café must be pretty empty” so I headed off to town and I was right! Only a couple others in here right now, so I can write away with out interruptions! Hehe and from the sounds outside – I think Ghana may have just scorred! After a month of work at the regional office I’ve started going out to the districts. This week and next I am in Savelugu/ Nanton district which is just North of Tamale. Its about a ½ hr drive (when you don’t get lost! More abt that later) and I’ve been getting a ride ... read more

Nau Guorum Reporting in once again from good ol’ Tamale. Another update, before things are abt to change drastically. For the past 4 weeks I’ve been working here at the regional office. I’ve been through 4 different departments (last week I wrote abt 2, this week I’ll write abt the other 2 - post harvest and animal traction). But next week I’m heading out to the districts! Yay! First I will spend two weeks in Savelugu, which is just north of Tamale (maybe 15 min drive – I’ll be able to still live at home) and then after that we’ll play it by ear. Maybe I’ll rotate through some other districts, maybe if things are going well I’ll focus my work there and just do some visits to the other districts. My weeks at the regional ... read more

Marraba! Welcome back So, its been awhile since I updated this, I wrote most of this post on Sunday, but a bunch of circumstances beyond my control (rain storm, disk drive not working, website not working etc) have delayed the posting. Hehe and the longer I couldn't post, the more I had to say, so it's gotten a little long. Everything’s still going really well, here's what I have to share: Last Tuesday, Navid and I went clothes shopping. My family’s friend is a seamstress so we went there. I ended up buying one dress and one other outfit (pants and a long shirt/dress/jumper kind of thing). I haven’t worn the dress yet, but my friend Jane from work has invited me to church this Sunday, so that’ll be a good opportunity. The other outfit I ... read more

Here's some first impressions and how my time in Ghana started out :) 11 EWB short term volunteers arrived in Accra, the capital of Ghana around 7 at night on Sunday May 8. That was exactly 24hrs after we had left our hostel in Toronto for the airport. (We had a 7 hr layover in Amsterdam). First Impressions? It was dark hot and humid! The hot and humid I had expected, but the dark, I hadn’t expected that at all, but it makes sense, being so close to the equator it gets dark between 6 and 6:30. The long term volunteers met us at the airport. It was really good to be met, I think we would have been fairly lost otherwise! We got some cabs to take us to our hostel/guest house. And then went ... read more

So I’ve been here for just about 2 weeks now and I’m really starting to get settled in. Here’s some info about what I’ve been up to: Tamale Tamale is a neat city, I wasn’t in Accra long, but I think I like Tamale better. There’s a big market, which we explored around last weekend, it was fun. They sell everything there from carpets to light bulbs to clothes to vegetables and meat. There’s a billion Taxis which is good because I live towards the outskirts of town. There’s goats and sheep everywhere! It somehow seems slightly less disorganized then Accra, but maybe that’s just because I now know it better. Bicycles are everywhere as well. Navid has bought one because he lives far from work and uses it to get there. I think I might ... read more

Hello McGill EWB Team! I hope this finds you well and rested from the Easter Holiday, and not too burned-out from the end-of-semester assignments and fundraising efforts! I have decided to write-up this special post on my blog such that you have a better idea of my work here, as well as a better idea of the development realities I am facing at the time. Hope you will find the read enjoyable and thought provoking! Quick overview: So as some of you might know, the small-scale irrigation project the McGill team and I were tied to ran out of funds last December. This means that since then, there is no one in the EnterpriseWorks (our partner NGO) office working on it, and no office resources (vehicles, promotion expenses, travel expenses) can be allocated to it. I've just been to Mole National Park. The 'e' at the end is pronounced. I visited it from the Northern town of Tamale. I spent rather longer in Tamale than I planned because I arrived in the town during a national holiday. I arrived in Tamale on Ghana's 48th anniversary of its independence. Mole National Park is Ghana's best place for viewing classic African wildlife, and it's cheap! The entrance fee to the park was 40000 Cedis, which is about 2 pounds sterling. A 2 hours walking tour in the park with an armed guide was only 18500 Cedis, that is only about 1 pound sterling. Added to which the lodge I stayed at was in the park - so you could watch the elephants at the waterhole from the lodge swimming pool! The lodge itself ... read more
