On Monday night we went out for a few drinks to a bar about 20 mins from where we're living...it was pretty much like being in Spain or Greece drinking outside and its still so hot at 1am its crazy!!! Plus its like 1.5 cedis (75p) for a pint so it makes it even better!!! Anyway I didn't think I was too drunk but we left for the academy on Tuesday and on the 3 hour tro tro ride up there I felt soooooo bad!!! I had to hang out of the window to get some breeze cos I felt so ill!!! Lesson learnt there....don't drink the ... read more

So this was the first week I went to all of my classes. Ok, before you start to judge me as a bad student, let me explain classes here. They’re a joke. My religion class isn’t too bad, the material is interesting because its about different African myths and symbols. I see the Adinkra symbols all over around here so its really cool to learn what they all mean. I have a group project in that class in a few weeks and Im trying really hard to not get frusterated with my group. They just work differently here. Something as simple as deciding on a meeting place turns into a big ordeal and compromise is not an option. For example, one lady in our group has 2 classes on Wednesday and gets out of class at ... read more

Each morning as the tide receded, a young boy walked along the beach plucking starfish from the drying sand. Abandoned by the water, the starfish were sure to die in the growing heat. But the boy would toss each starfish he came upon back into the cool and calming waves. A passerby shook his head at the boy’s slow pursuit and grunted, “Don’t bother, child. Those starfish go on for miles. You’ll never make a difference.” But the boy, cradling another small creature in his hand, tossed it back to the sea and simply replied, “It made a difference to that one.” So I knew it was just a matter of time until this day happened, but it was still a smack in the face when it finally did. Its never easy when you have the ... read more

Ugh, so I wrote a really good blog entry and didnt save it, and lost the internet connection so its all gone. Ill try to rewrite one but it wont be as good as the first one. sorry! so the past 3 days I have spent all day at the school getting worn out by little kids. Its been really rewarding and yesterday I got the best "thank you" that anyone could ever receive. I walked into the compound and in 10 seconds had about 30 kids stampeading towards me. They almost knocked me over and I was greeted with a thousand hugs and hellos. It was incredible! definately a "this is why Im here" moment. Teaching english to the older kids is going pretty well. My class has about 12 people in it so luckily ... read more

I've only got a few minutes, but I'll try to make some progress here. SO! I'm in Ghana. I've been here for nearly two weeks now which is hard to believe. Let me try to scratch the surface of what's going on. Travel from the U.S to here was kind of a daze, I didn't sleep much, tried to read up about the country and was pleasently surprised by the gallery of 17th century dutch art, and Van Gogh paintings in the Amsterdam airport. Very interesting mix of people there also. I asked a woman about the gate to the Accra flight and she responded smiling but with a tone of - are you serious- "you are going to Ghana?!". Before we even took off I met Seth, the Ghanaian man sitting next to me, who ... read more

Most of Saturday (June 7th) was taken up by a rugby match between the volunters and Ghana under 18's. I was very much looking forward to playing, as its been a couple of years since i last played, however without a gum shield, it wasn't really worth taking the risk, and having no studded boots would have also been a problem. I will have to go to sports store 'Game' on the way to Begoro this week so i can sort myself out with some gear, as there should be some more matches coming up in the next few weeks. The match was to be played at the University of Accra, which is not far away from Teshie (15-25 miles), but a huge traffic jam on the way meant that it took almost three hours to ... read more

Well i've made it to Ghana ok, the plane touched down at around 8-45pm on Saturday, 30 minutes late due to delays at Heathrow. I was told it was quite a good flight, although having never flown before i have nothing to compare it to. It had been raining quite a lot earlier in the day, so the humidity was very evident as soon as i stepped off the plane, i actually thought it was raining it was that bad. I was then met out side the airport by James, the Ghanaian who is organizing the program over here with his twin brother John (both of whom are not much older than my self and other fellow gap year students), and a couple of other guys who had joined the program a few weeks ago. We ... read more
