This past weekend I went to an orphanage in Koforidua. We are going there again next weekend to help with a program where they are honoring all the donors that contributed to the orphanage. The whole group did not go this past weekend, just a few of us. I left on Saturday morning around 8:30 or so and did not get to the orphanage until around 1, but that is to be expected. We took a tro to Madina and then from there we took one to Koforidua. Once we arrived at the orphanage we began painting one of the buildings. There were more of us than the work we had to do because we were also supposed to be helping put up a roof but the man that was supposed to show us fell ill. ... read more

Sorry Ive not uploaded anything yet, Ive only just found a computer!! Last week I had my orientation in Accra. It was very very busy but everyone in Ghana is extremely friendly and wants to talk to you, so a day out is very tiresome as you have to talk to everyone. You aso get 'Oberoni' shouted at you all the time which means 'white person' so you stand out, as then everyone turns to look at you. They also think that you have lots of money so everyone was always trying to sell you something and walking 10 metres would take up to an hour!! In orientation I learnt an African dance from the Greater Accra region and also had a drumming lesson. These were both really fun but very difficult so I will have ... read more

7/27/08 I’ll start off this entry with a description of my American meal in Koforidua last week. I decided that if I was going to have some American style food that I better go all the way. I ordered a beef burger with cheese, a side of potato chips (french fries in American English), and an ice cold Coca-Cola. To polish off the day I grabbed a fan ice in the tro back to Old Tafo for dessert. The fries cost just as much as the cheeseburger, but it was worth ever pesewa. I spent half of my weekly allowance on that one meal, and I’ll definitely do it again before I head to my site. If I were in America I’d say that the cheeseburger was decent at best, but considering my current situation I ... read more

7/12/08 There have been a few eventful days since the last time I wrote in the blog. Last week there was a ceremony in Old Tafo to signify the beginning of the two weeks of preparation for the Ohum Festival. The festival is an annual celebration that involves a few surrounding communities, but is centered in Old Tafo. There is a lot about the festival that I still don’t know so I will be writing about it more in the upcoming weeks as I get the info. For right now, the most important thing to know is that there is no drumming or dancing in the participating communities for the two weeks prior to the festival, hence the ceremony I attended. Sadly, we will not have drumming and dancing practice for our swearing-in ceremony for the ... read more

6/23/08 I realized that I am probably going to be too busy during training to access the blog frequently, so I am going to make a series of entries on my computer and post larger and less frequent posts. A lot of stuff has already happened since the last time that I made a post. It is a good thing I am keeping a journal to remember all of the details. For never having kept a journal before, I am pretty proud of how often I am writing in it. Mostly it just has all the facts that I would otherwise forget, but at this rate I could probably have a publishable set of memoires by the end of two years. I digress from the stuff you people actually want to read about… After my vision ... read more

Hello I am now heading towards my last 24 hours here in the Kwahu region of Ghana as I leave for the airport tomorrow at 1pm.I have mixed feelings about my departure but will probably not fully appreciate what I have learnt etc until I have settled back home. Last Wednesday I went to Kumasi with Susan and I collected my passport with my extended visa.We were lucky to find a taxi driver who took us all the way to Kumasi for the same price as a tro tro. This meant a comfotable 2 hour journey straight through instead of a stop start one. Thursday and Friday I went into school and we finished the PE lesson on Friday with over 100 kids doing the Hokey Cokey - what a brilliant sight. The lessons go really smoothly now ... read more

............... be warned I fly home next Weds !! I have had a good week so lots to tell you all about. Last Weds the 3 day district sport competition started so Katie and I went to the stadium to cheer on 'our' children who were competing. We arrived at 9 and a track had been marked out in soot from fires. However,in true Ghana style nothing had really started by 10.30 so we headed to the internet for an hour. When we returned,we could hear whistles and cheers which was a positive sign.We watched some 400m heats and some of our kids ran,the highlight was 2nd place for one of the girls.Normally,400m would be one lap of a track but these kids ran twice round as we were told the track was only 200m.It definitely looked longer and ... read more

Hello again A funny week as everything was geared up for Easter.A lot of people in the Kwahu region actually live and work in Accra and Kumasi but they own properties here so everyone heads back for Easter. The local population increases by about a million people who come to party so it is like New Years Eve and Notting Hill Carnival all rolled into one. On Weds I turned up at school to be toled it was a holiday as the teachers all needed to apply for identity cards,it is all so random ! On Thurs,Katie and I took the older kids for P.E. again and had another great hour or so with them.Katie warmed them up with a rendition of 'heads, shoulders, knees and toes' and the we did the balloon 'over and under' game in teams. This ... read more

A great example of the joy I was talking about in my last blog entry (if you read that ramble) was my last Sunday. Danny (my baseball coach) invited some people to go to the village some of his family is from for the year celebration of his Auntie’s funeral. Although it only takes about 30 minutes without traffic to get to Aburi (a-bree), it feels like a completely different world. Aburi is pretty much on top of a mountain, at least 10 degrees cooler than Accra, with very few mosquitoes, and a beautiful botanical garden. We ate, drank, and danced with Danny and his family in celebration of this woman’s life and the fact she was in Heaven. Asante people wear beautiful white fabric to these celebrations, and everyone was really welcoming. Again, it was ... read more
