Az első hét eléggé stresszes volt: megismerni a környéket, pár alap kifejezést és szót felszedni, kipróbálni a helyi ételeket és italokat, lakás után kajtatni és persze a munkát elkezdeni...bár ez utóbbi nagyon sok gonddal járt és jár még mindig. Hétfőn lelkesen bementünk az irodába, ami kiderült, hogy egy másik szervezethez tartozik és kerestük Mártont, a kapcsolattartónkat. A meetingek miatt csak délután tudott időt szakítani ránk, ahol persze a szokásos van egy jó meg egy rossz híremmel kezdte. A jó hír az volt, hogy Etiópia csodálatos, úgyhogy nagyon szerencsések vagyunk, hogy itt lehetünk. A rossz az, hogy az iroda megszűnt, ők harcolnak, hogy maradhassanak, de nekünk már nincs hely. De ne aggódjunk, mert a GLEN projektek már csak ilyenek, egy évvel hamarabb írják meg a pályázatot és mire az önkéntesek odaérnek addigra sehol senki...hát ez akkorsem volt megnyugtató számunkra. De segond, felajánlott nekünk egy munkát a DOT nevű kanadai szervezetnél (www.ethiopia.dotrust.org) , akik szociálisan kirekesztett fiatalokkal foglalkoznak, főként árván felnőtt, HIV poziv, szexuális kereskedelemből kiszakadt felnőttekkel, akiknek alap business oktatást biztosítanak, hogy később a saját vállalkozásukat el tudják indítani és így a társadalomban újból résztvehessenek. A mi feladatunk a már meglévő tananyag interaktívvá formálása, hogy a közösségek kicsit könnyedebb módon tanulhassák az export-import fortéjait 😊)

A másik nagy stressz a szállás volt. Addisban európaiként lakást keresni egy kálvária. Természetesen dupla árat adnak meg kapásból, amiből alkudozva is az otthoni szinten vagyunk (8000birr/fő/3hónap, ami kb 100,000HUF)...az első héten megismert európai arcoktól elkértük az összes bróker telefonszámát, akiken keresztül sikerült álmaink lakását megtalálni. Távol a "Bole homes aka fehér negyedtől", ahol egymás szomszédságában élnek a nagykövetségeken dolgozó gyakornokok és GTZ-hez szerződött németek, a Kera nevű kerületben bérlünk egy kertesházat egy félig olasz, félig etióp családtól. Azt leszámítva, hogy az ígéretüket nem tartották be és 4nap helyett 2hétig még velünk maradtak iszonyatosan kedvesek, nyitottak a kultúráinkra és munkánkra, ötleteinkra. A helyiektől rendszeresen megkérdezem, hogy mit gondolnak a rengeteg NGO-ról és alapítványról (Etiópiaában több, mint 700 nem-profit szervezet működik, csak Addisban több, mint 7000német él), hogy nem zavaró-e ez a dömping, de mivel az etiópok hihetetlenül tapintatos emberek, mindenki pozitívan látja a külföldiek jelenlétét és résztvállalását. Az én véleményem nem ennyire felhőtlen, de én nem is vagyok olyan kedves és kifinomult, mint a helyiek 😊)
Furcsa látni a benga nagy 4x4es LandRovereket UN felirattal furikázni és elmenni a nagy nemzetközi szervezetek fegyveres őrökkel őrzött épületei mellett, vagy beszélni a saját főnökünkkel, aki 13éve él itt, de a köszönömön kívül nem tud mást amharul...Ezért is óriási előny, hogy helyiekkel lakunk, mert naponta tanulunk új kifejezéseket, ami persze teljesen ámulatba ejti a minibusz utazóközönségét 😊)


The first week was really exhausting: getting to know the neighbourhood, learning some basic Amharic, trying every food and drink, looking for an apartment and arranging the work. This last one was a bit surprising as it turned out on Monday when we went to work that the new Ethiopian government is not 100%!h(MISSING)appy with our presence, thus we can not continue the project and we can not use the office neither...Márton, our coordinator was still positive as he said, no worries girls, GLEN projects are like this usually, but you are here and you can enjoy this beautiful country at least. We were just saying hmm, well, wwwww, okay, nice, but we WANT to work!! It is a really frustrating feeling coming from Europe, from a pretty different working environment where you are pushed to work more and more and 8 hours is not enough and come to work here, where they tell you that the next meeting to see your boss will be 5 days later, so until then just have a rest and enjoy yourself...But finally on Friday we were introduced to DOT (www.ethiopia.dotrust.org), which is a Canadian foundation that teaches basic business to vulnerable youth and marginalized people (orphans, AIDS/HIV positive people, women in sexual commerce) so that they can set up their own business and can get back to society. Our project is to transform the modules to an interactive way that can be thought to the communities in an easy way and hopefully fun way.

The other stressful part of the first week was the accommodation: as for Europeans it is always the double the price, so even after bargaining we pay 8000 birr/pp/month (approx 370€), but for a nice house with garden at Kera, far away from the "Bole homes" where all the Europeans live next to each other. We rent this house from an Ethiopian-Italian family that goes back to Milan, and while they are away they let us live in their house, Susi and Moritz from Germany, permanently Miks from Latvia and Me. Baby and Paolo are really open minded and are interested in our cultures and projects. I asked them -as I always ask the locals what they think about the presence of NGOs and foundations here (currently there are more than 700NGOs in Ethiopia and more than 7000 Germans in Addis), but as Ethiopians are really polite and reserved they always give positive answers. My opinion is more critical...seeing the gigantic LandRovers passing by with huge UN sign, or passing by the guarded buildings of the international organizations, or even just talking to our boss who has lived here for 13 years and only knows to say thank you in Amharic...but this is an other reason why it's great living together with Ethiopians, because every day we pick up some words that make the people amazed and laugh on the minibus the way back home 😊)

It's been a very interesting journey to follow so far. On the Minibus you seemed a little intimidated but now you are smiling with a beer in your hand. I think things will only get better from here on out. It is never easy to blend in with a new culture but your doing a wonderful job of it. Is Amharic a difficult language to learn? BTW I also think its a great thing you chose to live with the natives of the country. It has never made sense when people leave their own nation and travel half way around the world to ignore those peoples indigenous culture. It may make things more difficult in the short term but over the long term I'm sure it will be very rewarding. Enjoy yourself and keep us updated.
