If you want to catch up there is an entry for the Pyramids. Didn't want to create too many emails. Our tour has taken us to Alexandria where we visited the National Museum, the Catacombs, the New Alexandria Library, before moving to El Alamein to visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery including the grave of the youngest Australian soldier buried there. He was 16. There are 7367 graves here. We returned to Cairo for a visit to the Egyptian museum which deserves it's own post. (if I get time). Then to Luxor. KARNAK TEMPLE AND LUXOR TEMPLE Everything about the Karnak Temple is huge. The site covers 2km and is large enough to contain 10 cathedrals. Karna was the most important place of worship in Egypt during the New Kingdom. Construction began in the 16th century and ... read more

At Luxor railway station we bargain with a taxi driver for a “good price” for the short ride to our hotel. Good for whom? The taxi is a battered old Peugeot 204, perhaps 50 years old? The door locks don't really work; the boot is held open with a stick; the speedo is stuck on zero. But it gets us to the illustrious Winter Palace Hotel, or rather its newer and cheaper Pavilion wing. Our room overlooks the wonderful gardens. The Winter Palace Hotel has always been the place to stay and everybody has – from Lady Di to Richard Gere. In 1923, Howard Carter used the hotel's imposing staircase as his podium to announce to the world’s press that he had, at last, found Tutankamun's tomb. The Nile is wide here and a local ferry, ... read more

Today, Renata and I are going on our first ever hot air balloon ride. We are so excited to witness the mesmerizing ancient monuments of Luxor from high in the sky. Hot Air Balloon Ride After an early morning pickup (around 3:00 a.m.) with Sinbad tours, Renata and I traveled to the east bank where we boarded a boat that took us to the west bank of the Nile river. In the boat we were given a brief safety demonstration and we had to fill out a waiver form in case anything happened. When we arrived at the Hot Air Balloon site, it was pitched black and Sinbad tours was just starting to slowly fill up the balloons. We boarded our Hot Air Balloon and the group had to shuffle around to distribute weight equally in ... read more

This morning we had to unfortunately say goodbye to the amazing crew who took care of us on our Felucca journey for the past two nights as we head back to Luxor. On our way to Luxor, we stopped at the Temple of Edfu, which is considered the best preserved temple in Egypt. Temple of Edfu The Edfu temple is the second largest temple in Egypt after Karnak Temple. It has an inner sanctuary and is dedicated to the falcon god Horus. As the son of Osiris and Isis, Horus avenged his father Osiris's death at the hands of Seth in a great battle at Edfu. Seth was exiled and Horus took the throne. Egyptian Pharaohs claim to be the incarnation of Horus, who was said to be "the living king." The temple was buried in ... read more

Today Renata and I explored three places in Luxor: The Colossi of Memnon, the Valley of the Kings and the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. We finished the evening with a Nubian Dinner at a nearby Nubian village in Aswan. Colossi of Memnon The Colossi of Memnon are these two massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III made from sandstone. The faces are a little run down but they are interesting to behold. The Valley of the Kings The Valley of the Kings was a highlight of our day in Luxor and one of the highlights of our trip to Egypt. Along with building massive pyramids, the Ancient Egyptians also built underground tombs which housed many ancient Pharaoh treasures. The most famed collection of underground tombs is located in the Valley of the Kings which ... read more

LUXOR I'm in Luxor for my last 3 days in Egypt. I'd saved the best for last. Several of the world's most famous and most ancient sites now lay at my doorstep. My hotel was on the West Bank of the Nile, in the Valley of the Kings, the location where the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered a century ago. Despite knowing that I still wasn't prepared for just how astounding and exceptional the antiquity would be. There is so much. I explored them under the expert guidance of Ahmad Almozamel my Egyptologist guide. I was more than eager to get out there so we made an early start, as always in desert lands it is customary to start early to avoid being out in the midday heat (though I love that!) Called LUXOR today, it ... read more

LUXOR. A SURFEIT OF RICHES. There are people today who have such excessive wealth you wonder what they do with it all. Billionaires. Bill Gates, the Saudi sheiks, institutions like the Queen of England and the Vatican. So much wealth its unimaginable and sickening. If Luxor was a person they would be one. The quantity and quality of antiquity here is unimaginable. There is the East Bank with Karnak temple, the world's largest temple complex. There is Thebes the city of a hundred gates, and Luxor Temple. There are the West Bank monuments with Hatshupset's Temple aligned on a direct axis with the Karnak Temple on the opposite Bank. There are the Colossi of Memnon just sitting casually on the road leading to the monument area. There is the Temple of Ramsis II second only to ... read more

Firstly the train journeys in other countries are always an interesting experience, and the 11 hours from Cairo to Luxor didn't disappoint. I'd read online that if you book a ticket at the station through the ticket booths you'll be sold a night ticket on the tourist train which costs around $100! BUT this is easily avoided by going to the self serve ticket machine and buying a ticket yourself. It's fine to do this, no ones going to stop you. The rule is presumably there to make tourists spend more money. So for E£57 I had a ticket to Luxor. Unfortunately the train at night was fully booked when I wanted to leave so I ended up “wasting” a whole day on the train. Perhaps this could've been easily avoided had I not been lazy ... read more
