Day 61: Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Aswan, Egypt to Edfu, Egyp via Nile cruise. Per the Contiki Egypt brochure: "This morning, why not join our fantastic excursion to Abu Simbel- the most complete example of ancient Egyptian architecture. Built by Pharaoh Ramses II more than 3,000 years ago, the temples were moved over a period of years to their new site safely above the waters of Lake Nasser. After lunch, we cruise to Kom Ombo to view this unique temple, shared by two Gods. We reach Edfu, where we spend the night on-board." Per my stomach: You really ate/drank something you shouldn't have. I must have picked up the travel bug (though I've been following the rules for eating/drinking in Egypt). There are a couple of others that are not doing so hot so it's nice ... read more

Day 60: Monday, January 25, 2010. Aswan, Egypt Per the Contiki Egypt brochure: "Arriving in Aswan midmorning we view the unfinished obelisk and visit the High Dam. We sail on a felucca to the Botanical Gardens before joining our cruise ship for a sumptuous lunch." We pull into Aswan around 8:30 am and hop on another tour bus. First we head to the High Dam and it was pretty impressive to see how they control the Nile River. We then pass by the a monument that looks like a giant Lotus flower which commemorates the friendship between Russia & Egypt (they helped build the dam.) We get to the Unfinished Obelisk and rock quarry. This was going to be the tallest obelisk ever made and it was being made under the order of Queen Hatshepsut. Unfortunately, ... read more

Cairo to Aswan So it's Sunday 3 Jan and I'm in Aswan, waiting to catch the ferry tomorrow to Wadi Halfa in the Sudan. The bike is already on another barge which (hopefully!) left yesterday and providing it doesn't sink should arrive in Wadi Halfa with us on Tuesday, although nobody can guarentee when either the passenger or vehicle ferry will get to Wadi Halfa. Insha'Allah it will get there... Insha'Allah on Tuesday :D Should be good fun though. I have a deck class ticket which apparently entitles me to the scrum of securing a spot on the deck with I dunno how many other people and spending 24 hours or more up on top in the sunshine and then under the stars. I have my little travel hammock with me and am hoping to get ... read more

Following Ivan's speedy recovery (nothing like a good old fashioned home remedy of lemon and garlic) we board the Felucca. The boat takes over an hour to depart, however we aren't left bored due to great friends we meet along the way. This includes Wilson and Susan, brother and sister currently residing in Hong Kong and New York, both growing up in San Francisco. The other couple is Marco and Linda, both from Montreal. We sail to this nice Nubian village and get to meet some local kids and walk around the village. We finally make it to the first destination of the evening, an inlet inhabited by some camels. Unfortunately the boat becomes sand logged that night and instead of falling asleep listening to the gentle melody of waves lapping our boat, we instead fall ... read more

We decide to leave Aswan by Felucca. Felucca for those that don't know refers to the sailing boats that you see float up and down the Nile seemingly without a care in the world. The captain and everyone who knows someone who has a boat are all keen to make commission off you the unsuspecting tourist in Aswan by selling you a trip. The trips come in various colours, sizes of boats and numbering days. We decide to pick a trip for three days sailing and two nights sleeping on the boat. The boat is to sail us to Edfu where we join on a bus that takes us to the Edfu Temple and then to the Temple of Kom Ombo before we get to Luxor. We meet with a few captains and we finally get ... read more

I had been feeling nervous about flying Egypt Air. I had images of a seriously old aircraft held together by pieces of sticky tape and string, goats sitting on passengers knees and chickens escaping from wooden crates before flying up the aisle and trapping their wings in the dangling oxygen masks. Okay, I now realise that my ridiculous little imagination was doing some serious overtime. Our Egypt Air domestic flights were absolutely fine. Nice new planes, a drinks service, a business class lounge at Cairo airport (okay, so we upgraded on two sectors - had to get away from those damn chickens) and even an inflight magazine. And the views? Amazing. I spent every flight with my eyes glued to the window. The desert was an endless and beautiful place from above. The dark, blue Nile ... read more

Aswan and Nubia Following our amazing time in Alexandria we are keen for our next amazing adventure. It comes to us in an overnight train to Aswan. We arrive at the ticketing office in Alexandria and ask for a standard Egyptian train ticket to Aswan, where the locals travel. The ticket seller is surprised but sells us the ticket. It's a 14 hour journey but we think no big deal right, we've done lots of train traveling before right? The train turns out to be a 14 hour ALL stops ride to Aswan. The train is constantly full of life at ALL hours of the day. Someone is smoking in the carriage, another listens to music on his/her phone whilst a a few men chat over there. We arrive to Aswan and locate a hotel. Post ... read more

Arrived in Aswan yesterday morning (friday). Friday and Saturday are the weekend here, plus Aswan is super laid back compared to Cairo so we are really enjoying our relaxing time along the Nile here. After arriving at the train station we saw the unfinished Obelisk, which is a huge cut stone that never got removed because of a crack that developed. From their we saw the huge Nile dams, Lake island and the temple of Isis on Philae island, which dates to 200-300 BC. We then checked in our Nile cruiseship where we'll be the next 3 nights and days.... read more

Sorry. No photos this time. I just can't read sufficient Arabic to work out how to convince this computer to upload the upload program We are on the real Nile now. Away from Cairo where the river is spectacular but seems to serve as a rubbish disposal mechanism we get see the Nile as the powerful and important river that its size and length justifies. We hadn't seen a great deal of it until Luxor because we took a great loop out into the Sahara. Now the functions of the Nile are on proper display. Irrigation for agriculture along the valley floor, a transport corridor for feluccas and all manner of small boats and, most importantly, the means of carting masses of tourists in large boats from Luxor to Aswan. Luxor is dedicated to tourists but ... read more

Peace is certainly not upon me in Luxor. It would seem not all of Africa's top predators operate at dusk. The Egyptian streets are infested with voracious, hyena-like touts, and the Luxorian variety surely cannot be matched for cunning, capacity for deceit, or infuriating insistence by any of its Egyptian or even worldwide counterparts. I am not exaggerating when I say that almost every word spoken to us in our three days here is insincere and we are frequently subjected to outright and shameless lies. In researching this trip I had heard a lot of accounts about how fed up travellers can get with Egypt, and I thought to myself, 'surely it can't be that bad'. Generally I’ve found it to be wearisome but not unmanageable. However, Luxor really would test the patience of Buddha. It ... read more
