Geo: -19.9964, 23.4168We were up before sunrise the next day for our short but early flight to Maun. Although it was an international flight we were a little surprised to find ourselves on a sixteen seater twin propeller plane with the co pilot handing our meal to us as we boarded up the stairs. Obviously no cocktails would be served on this flight! The advantage was however that we flew at a lower altitude and could easily see the ground below and watch as the landscape changed from desert to delta. The town of Maun was about the same size as Mareeba. Mostly consisting of shops, banks, travel agents and a handful of restaurants. With the odd donkey and chicken wandering around it appeared a lot less westernised than any of the towns in Namibia. Once ... read more

The Old Bridge Backpackers. Such a lovely place to arrive at after the days in Cape Town! The bar and restaurant that are overlooking the river. The fig trees that gives shade. The pool that you can cool of in during and after a hot day. The out door showers that allow you to watch the stars while having a shower. The tent we slept in. The nice staff. Awesome! We higly recomend this place! Horses! Our first day we just spent in the sun. Finaly it is warm! =) And we knew that in the afternoon we would - at last!- go horsebackriding. One from the staff took us to the stables by boat, don't we all love boats? =) We got our horses and set of, surrounded by dogs that was very excited to ... read more

Day 22 (Tuesday, 12-May-09, JRJ) Up at 8am, had breakfast and packed away our stuff, ready to go to back to Benji and found out that what we thought were hungry hippos outside our tent turned out to be hungry cows munching on the grass. Left camp at 9:45 after another logistical fiasco. 4X4 broke down on the way back to village, which put us behind schedule by another 30 mins. Once our stuff was all loaded onto the truck and we set off, we got stuck in the sand, which took 15 mins to get free. Got to Maun about 3pm, in plenty of time for our scenic flight over the Delta. After we paid by credit card for our flights at the Delta Air office, we realised, after talking to others, that it would ... read more

We also have a Kenyan crew consisting of a tour leader, driver and a cook. We have a rotar system where we help out with cooking and cleaning, the food is very good! At Chobe National Park we went on a sleep-out safari where we had an afternoon game drive followed by supper at the campsite in the middle of the bush where we slept for the night. We really were in the thick of it ... read more

Words cannot begin to describe how unbelievably incredible our experience was in the Okovango Delta. We have just got off the plane (a half an hour flight over the glorious delta) and are sitting in a small internet cafe. I have to start off by saying that it has absolutely been the highlight of our trip so far. The flight over to the Kwara airstrip was a one in a lifetime experience. From the air i saw elephants, giraffe, Wildebeast, Ostrich and countless birds. Once landed we were met by Hobbs, one of the friendly guides from Little Kwara, and he drove us to the camp. The camp was truly stunning, overlooking a beautiful wide plain and waterhole and set in and amongst the trees. I was lost for words - this may sound a little ... read more

Happy New Year! I hope all of you had a lovely holiday season and have a wonderful 2009!!! Back to the blog - we said goodbye to lovely Namibia and headed to our next destination - Botswana! After an overnight bus trip, we arrived about 30 kilometers from the Botswana border. We weren't quite sure how to get to the border from there (or how to go further for that matter!), but again we were blessed with good travel karma. We hitched a ride with a nice guy to the border, and from there we caught a ride with a really sweet trucker from South Africa. He brought us to our next destination - the Okavango Delta! Botswana is probably most famous for its wealth of diamonds and this magnificent stretch of water. The Okavango Delta ... read more

We had a really long drive day after our night in Thebe Safari Camp, 12 hours in all. I woke up with my knee still being very sore and painful to put any weight on for too long and my infected mossie bite looking very badly infected again. My infection is on my foot on my other leg. My foot is now very red and has swollen to twice its usual size. The pressure I can feel in it is just amazing, and painful. It feels like it could explode. So now I can hardly walk at all and I can't put weight comfortably on either leg - this is getting beyond a joke now. I spent most of the day in the truck lying across three seats with my legs and feet up. Then after ... read more

Hi Everyone! Forgive me for writing this now I'm home, but internet in the African countryside is hard to come by. Right, longest journey ever! 11hours on a plane to Johanesburg and then 2 full days driving through South Africa and Botswana. We stopped in Palapye on our first night and were supposed to camp, but due to it being dark and none of us knowing how to put the tents up we all bunked on the floor in one room. A superb way to get to know everyone! We had a traditional African Braai (bbq) with delicious Botswana sausages. They wouldn't say what was in them so I assume that we wouldn't want to know! We then continued travelling. There are lots of wild donkeys and goats which keep getting in the way of our ... read more

Just a quick update to say that we are now in Botswana. We are preparing for a camping trip into the Okavango Delta. I am really looking forward to sleeping among the animals! Yesterday was our last day in Namibia, the highlight of which was meeting a tribe of Bushmen. They were so incredibly friendly! I should go before the tour bus leaves without me, but again I hope everything is going well at home. Thanks for all the messages!... read more

Driving into Botswana from Namibia is long long and boring. The landscape is unvaried and by and large hardscrabble desert. I listened to an entire book on my ipod during the drive, and I'm going to have 10 of these blog entries written in my notebook before I actually get to post them, as all potential internet connections actually don't work when called upon. Today we arrived in Maun at a reasonable hotel which had an INTERNET CAFE! I was so excited. However, the cafe closed at 4pm, so of course, all safari groups would never get a chance to use it, as everyone gets in around 5 and leaves around 8! ah well. Boy this is Africa. I might have to resort to posting mail too. The one interesting thing that did happen today was ... read more
