So day 2 started the same as day 1, at 4am. Found a great coffee stop en route (or so we thought). A brand new gas station with an OK Supermarket, sadly though they don't sell coffee on a Sunday, the lord must be detoxing or something. On the road heding north through the Northern Cape and into the NW Provice got us to the Botswana border for 8am. I have to be honest the process was a little daunting at first as noone really tells you what you have to do. There's a few things involved and yep at one stage you have to part with cash surprise surprise (vehicle permit and insurance aparently). It's the first time I've been in a proper no-mans-land and it was qute an experience. All in all the guys ... read more

Rest of Zambia It rained heavily on Thursday night with lots of thunder, a bit hard to hear over the roar of the generator. I was snug in my tent, all safely zipped in- an insect-free zone. And the hotel provides a little plastic water paper bin, or wee bucket, so I could stay in all night. The day dawns dry with some cloud. It's hard to get into relaxing mode, I'm used to being busy. Sitting on a sunny terrace by a river, with a book to hand is lovely but I'm just waiting for my breakfast dip in Devil's Pool to begin. It's a boat ride from another hotel (the ,Royal Livingstone - very posh) to Livingstone island, to the edge of the falls where you can see the rainbow, then a swim across ... read more

After a number of hours driving, we cross the border into Botswana. At the border we crossed Limpopo River, where we were greeted by a monkey on the other side of the fence. As an American I did not need a visa. I don't think any of the people on the group did. So it was pretty easy and quick. It was my second stamp in my passport. :-) At the end of the long drive, we arrived at the Khama Rhino Sanctuary located in Serowe. The Sanctuary helps protect the wildlife, especially Rhinos from poaching. There are many Poaching lookout platforms throughout the Sanctuary. It was established in 1992 and lays on the Kalarahi. We arrived when it was pouring rain but still managed to go on the game drive. I am still not confident ... read more

Baines boababs to Kubu Island. After we realized what a long drive it was to get to Baines Boababs we decided that and early start to the day was needed. We were up at around 5 am and watched a spectacular sunrise. There was toilet facities and a shower. All outdoors and open. Nothing like getting in touch with mother nature. Once all was done and we had breakfast made by Adrian we hit the road. But first off to see these boababs that are so famous. What a spectacle they are. Their sheer size was unbelievable. I mean HOLY CRAP!!! It was breath taking and nothing like I have ever seen before. So after a few photo's we were off on our epic trip down to Kubu island but we soon had a problem- limited ... read more

Khama rhino sanctuary to baines baobabs We were all up early to watch the amazing sunset with a cup of coffee and a rusk around a newly lit fire courtesy of our resident boy scout Adrian. We decided to head out for a morning drive to find a few of the 46 resident rhinos. We saw a number of different species of animals which included a couple of black back jackals, a few zebra and as usual impala(the happy meal in the animal kingdom) and as you have probably noticed there was no mention of rhino in that sentence because we had not seen any which had been quite disappointing . We returned to camp, packed up and hit the road. After a long drive through soft sand we reached our destination but we first had ... read more

Geo: -19.9295, 26.1186This morning we left at 5:15am. Last night Neil and Claudine came over and the four of us packed our cars to the brim. We were going to Zimbabwe via Victoria Falls. For the trip we had to be self sufficient – our cars were so full. On the drive out of Madikwe we saw a couple of white rhinos, a brown hyena and a journey of giraffe. We exited the reserve at Derdepoort Gate and a couple of hundred meters down the road we were at the Derdepoort/Kopfontein border which borders South Africa and Botswana. The border opened at 6am and we were the first ones there. We passed through the border very quickly – now we were in Botswana. Luckily our car was not checked- it was full of things that could ... read more

Hi everyone, Well, are back from the bush and will be leaving for Ethiopia today. We had an exciting and frustrating time on our 12 day safari but all in all it was an amazing experience. Here are some of the highlights of the 12 day safari we took from Maun to Victoria Falls, Zambia. 1. First night at Maun at the River lodge backpackers watching the sun go down over the river and listening to the bell frogs (sound like wooden wind chimes) as they came into full chorus as the sun went down. 2. Flight over the Okavango in a Cessna 172 4 seater plane. 3. Seeing our first giraffes and zebras at Nxai National Park and hearing elephants at night and visiting 1,000 year old Baobab trees. 4. Seeing Deception Valley for the ... read more

Journey to Francistown Another Godfrey’s special “The plan” was that we would all travel to Francistown together in Godfrey’s combi with a trailer at the back with all the kit and luggage BUT! like all best plans and despite Will’s best effort, Godfrey let us down one more time. As a result, Mike R, Veronika and I ended up making the journey in the combi loaded to the brim and the rest of the team in a coach . Godfrey tried to kill us on numerous occasions, we nearly ran out of petrol and yet he still managed to smile and amuse us with his infectious laughter . The 5 ½ hour journey on the coach was not unlike a Wells Fargo stage coach: Indians and many other tribes, attacking bus at each stop with water, ... read more
