I'm moseying down to Hong Kong next week and plan to take the opportunity to buy a new camera. I would thus like to tap into Travel Bloggers' extensive knowledge for advice.
What is the best strategy for buying electronics?
Where are the best places?
What is the situation with warranties? Are global warranties standard, or come as extra?
Is it in fact still the cheapest place for electronics?
All help is greatly appreciated.
Reply to this Hi, I have been looking into this and found that prices on camera were substantially cheaper in Hong-Kong than in Europe. I had heard there were some special markets for electronic goods but I was short of time and just checked shops on Nathan Rd. Be aware that the sellers are very pushy and try to get you to buy a more expensive camera and lot's of peripherals, so you have to be focused on what you want and stick to that. So my advice is to check out prices in your alternative country, shop around and not be talked into buying sthg you can't afford/don't want. I believe the warranty was global but I am not sure about this.
Reply to this Thanks for your help! I'll post once I've got my camera as to my experiences...
Reply to this There's a chain called Broadway. Huge store in Mong Kok.
Can't haggle on price BUT you can ask them for add-ons.
I bought a camera at Broadway and it was pretty close to standard price - just a bit cheaper.
But I asked for screen protector, larger memory card, tripod, case, etc.
Good luck!
Reply to this Mong Kok is a fantastic place to buy electronics, at dusk the place really have a great vibe. It is still one of the cheapest places in the world to buy photographic equipment - certainly cheaper then Europe, Middle East and Australia. However, your warranty is unlikely to be of much use outside of Hong Kong. Some computer manufacturers now have worldwide warranties or region specific warranties (i.e. Asia-Pacific) but not sure if it has extended to cameras as yet. The one big caution you need to look out for is the language of your instruction manual.
Don't buy anything on Nathan Road - I would be very wary of any deal you do on that street. Broadway is on Sai Yeung Choi Street South in Mong Kok and there are plenty of other places on that street too. To reach there, head to Mong Kok station by MTR and leave by Exit D3.
Reply to this What about other electronic items? We are thinking about buying a new Ipod and maybe a netbook and are off to Hong Kong in August. Would Mong Kok be the best place to find cheap ipods and computers too?
Thanks
Reply to this Not sure about computers or ipods, I wasn't looking for those when I was there. Yes, a converter is important - though many electronic items (such as my netbook I'm now using at the Ben-Gurion airport in Israel) are rated from 100-240v so any power source within that range will be fine. Make sure to check what voltage tolerance of the items you wish to purchase and if it is too limited for your uses, you will need a converter.
Reply to this "Don't buy anything on Nathan Road" 100% True.
I'm a hong kong local. Here, local people will not shop on Nathan Road electronics shop.
Sai Yeung Choi Street in Mong Kok is a good choice.
There are many big electronic shops (chain shop) there. Broadway, Fortress, and Citicall are the big player. They normally give replacement within 7 days. If you find the product has problem, you can go to the shop and ask for a replacement within 7 days.
also, these chain shop always give add-ons, you can ask them too! 😊
