Hello all,
I am travelling solo to Mexico for just ten short days in September. I am arriving in Mexico city then i think going to head off down to puerto escondido way and around there. I was wondering if anyone knows of good hostels to stay.. Also i guess the idea is to meet people as i feel a little nervous about travelling on my own.. If anyone could give me any tips advice or even going to be there in September please give me a shout.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Fran
Reply to this Hello Fran 😊
If you want, you could put a post in the Looking for Travel Companions Forum to find people to meet up with.
I dont think you will have too much trouble travelling in Mexico, if you avoid doing things like wandering around alone after dark, keep valuables out of sight and dont wander around outside towns and cities on foot. I travelled in Mexico alone, and no harm came to me.
The Lonely Planet guide to Mexico gives good practical information for the independent traveller. I recommend it.
For hostels, Google hostels and the name of the town or city you want to find one in. A list will come up with reviews, ratings, prices......

Reply to this Be careful of the taxi's. Everyone is a taxi in Mexico and it is a good way to get yourself in trouble if you are not careful. Make sure the taxi has a license and the picture matches the driver! Stay safe!
Reply to this First tip, get out of Mex City. We do most of our backpacking in the Yucatan area. Great adventures, history, food, culture and beaches.
If heading west, make Chiapas a place to pass through.
Hasta la Vista
and buno suerte

There are great resortsand hotels in Mexico city.
Reply to this There are so many things to do in Mexico matched with its affordable deals and offers. Well, never mind swine flu, just make sure that you are wearing a protective mask to be safe if you are worried about the virus.

Reply to this I spent the spring traveling through Mexico and had a great time. Depending on how much time you have near Puerto Escondito, try to make it a little bit north to Chacahua. It's an amazing little beach town where most people bring tents, but there are some beds you can rent too. For details and directions see my blog entry - I'd be happy to translate the directions for you if need be - send me a message.
After visiting a lot of places, my top choices for places to go are Mexico City (and nearby, Cuernavaca and Taxco), Chiapas, Guadalajara (I found a great but new hostel there that may not be in the guidebooks yet), Chacahua, Xalapa/VeraCruz, and Guanajuato. Each of those regions and cities has a lot to offer and highlights different aspects of Mexico. Enjoy!
