Is there a way to cross from Alaska across the Bering Strait to (I guess) Chutkotchiy (sp?), then on to Mongolia? What would be the best way to do that without joining a tour? say, traveling alone. And visas, what's the deal on visas doing that? My ultimate goal would be to make it down to Vladivostok and get on the Transiberian Railway.
Reply to this I think the Russian authorities are very finicky about atypical border crossings, I guess it depends on if there is a regular port of entry in the area you want to visit. It would probably be alot easier to arrange it via a travel agent, since you'll probably still need a letter of invitation. You'd do well to check with your local Russian embassy.
