The weather managed to hold out a little for us for foxes glacier and we decided to take the hours walk up to it for some more amazing photos. As Jo so aptly put it on a quick video- small pappy, small lauren, BIG MOUNTAIN! The scenery is really quite impressive and me and Jo have both become rock/geology lovers overnight! Still on to Wanaka we headed via the Haast national park. Yet another awful awful drive with horrible scenery!!!! (Sense the sarcasm there!) We stopped off at the blue pools- I had been here last year and was keen for a swim this time around. A quick car change later and we were off with our towels to the pools. Covered head to toe with bug spray for good measure- I remembered Auntie Karen had come worse off last year with them and wasn't prepared for a repeat. When we got to the pools there was a large bus group also on the bridge having a look round. One girl was shocked to discover we were off for a swim and instantly wanted to join but had no swimmers. So off we went - I got in first and I'm
not going to lie it was beyond freezing! Took my breath away! Putting on a real British front I emerged declaring it wasn't all that bad- I was lying through my back teeth!!! Still it was enough to prompt the Germans and the rest of the brits; into what I can only describe as an Olympic style diving contest/battle of the nations off the bridge! Secretly I was rather pleased I had done it first for British pride! They also all found out just how cold it was! With some encouragement Jo also took the plunge but was less than impressed when she finally caught her breath!
Feeling triumphant and refreshed it was back in the van for Wanaka and a well earned rest.
The next day we went off to explore mount aspiring. It was only 51k away and the views were meant to be spectacular. We did get to one point though where the road ended and a dirt track began- ever aware of our last miss adventure off roading we approached this with extreme caution. Thankfully there were no rivers to cross and it didn't get any more treacherous than a gravel track. There were however plenty
of cows in the road to contend with. We ended up stopping by the river mouth and enjoyed a nice cider cooled off naturally by the river, with a dramatic glacial backdrop. Back in Wanaka for the night we did a spot of shopping before getting an early night.
Queenstown beckoned in the morning for a look around Arrowtown and some more shopping! The drive there was interesting with Jo skilfully navigating hairpin bend after hairpin bend. In the afternoon I had managed to get on a helicopter flight, thanks to a lovely gift from work colleagues at home. The trip up the Remarkables was- remarkable! The views were spectacular and it was a real treat to see it as I had never been on a helicopter before. We did plan to paint the town red in Queenstown that night but we were fit for nothing after dinner and all the excitement of the day.
In the morning Jo experienced her first
(Of many I am sure) Fergburger! Not to go at it half measures, she went for Big Al!! 1/2 a pound of meat with more cheese than you can shake a stick at, topped off with not one
but two eggs! Oh and I forgot to mention the side order of a peanut butter and banana milkshake! I am proud to say she finished it all and proclaimed she still wasn't full.
On the drive over to Te Anau she may have felt the aftermath of it all but dutifully got us there in one piece, before having a well earned meat nap that afternoon! In the evening we managed to touch base with Julian and Jemma again for a drink and a giggle.
We're off to do Milford sounds tomorrow so will check in then!
Meat love Lauren and Jo
