Hello 😊
I'm just getting around to writing my Guam travel blog….it's been very busy at work since we got back and it's the first chance I've had. In fact, I'm only allowed to do it as a treat for writing loads of reports yesterday! That's how exciting my life has been for the last 2 weeks!
So, Guam! We had a bit of a rush to the airport (standard) as we went to see Rachel's Teaching Assistant Annie on her wedding day first. She was getting married at 5pm, which we didn't know when we booked our flight for 8pm (we presumed it was going to be a bit earlier) so we couldn't stay for the whole thing, but we saw her in her 'bridal room' before the actual ceremony, gave our gifts and left! She look beautiful - I've put some photos on Facebook.
The flight was OK and we landed at about 2am in Guam to torrential rain. We thought that didn't bode well for our holiday, but it had stopped by the time we got to our hotel, and that set the precedent for the entire holiday - clear skies most of the time,
The beach
It was pretty much this empty and great the whole time! with about 5 minutes of heavy rain every single day! Anyway, obviously we went straight to bed.
From that point, that was pretty much the holiday - I was horizontal in bed, next to the pool, on the beach, or in the sea. We got up mainly to eat, apply more suncream and shop. So instead of doing a day by day account, I will just give you some highlights of things we actually did:
Places we ate - TGI Fridays, California Pizza Kitchen (twice), Pro A (amazing ribs!), Sea grill, Hard Rock Cafe, a great sushi place, Burger King (they had Cinnabon!), Lobster grill, Churrasco (brazilian meat on sticks) and KFC. Healthy!
Shopping is a big thing in Guam. It is American territory so many Japanese and Korean tourists visit there to buy designer products at duty free prices. I've never seen so many posh shops in one place! Of course, I also frequented the 'bargain' shops….
Places we shopped - Macy's, Payless supermarket (I bought food colouring because you can't get it easily in Korea and we often need it in school, and xmas gift bags because they were great!), DFS (Duty Free Shopping,
where I got many a cheap beauty cream and perfume!) and K-mart! K-Mart was basically like Matalan, Home Bargains and the Range all rolled into one - my Mum would love it!
Other things we managed to do - we walked to 'Two Lover's Point'. Everybody laughed at us for walking there as everybody else got the shuttle bus (which we got back!) There is some tale about two lover's jumping off into the sea because they couldn't be together, or something like that! We went to the Wednesday night market, where we saw some great organised dancing, and ate a brilliant tray of food each. We did the 'slingshot', where they put you in a big ball and shoot you into the air! Finally, we did make a friend on our last day who invited us down to the beach for a BBQ before our 2am flight on the Saturday night. We got a bit drunk, swam in the sea, then had to rush to the airport (again!)
The flight home was uncomfortable as they completely over heated the cabin and I could barely sleep, despite still being a bit drunk and it being the middle of
the night. I have then had a horrendous cold for the last 2 weeks, which I am blaming on Jeju Air!
Anyway, Guam was just what I needed - a huge chill out and a lovely time! The people were the most friendly I have ever met - I got free postcards at tourist information, cars would stop dead in the road to let you cross in front of them, the waiting staff in restaurants had full on conversations with us and offered to show us round the island and people would always say hello in the street. I also felt extremely thin all holiday, as I bought an XX small jumper in Macy's and I could never finish the huge portions of food they gave us! Great!
A recommendation to anybody who resides over this side of the world and needs to relax!
3 weeks until the plane home!
Claire 😊
