Most any trip to New York City must involve the famous Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Having been to Yankee Stadium a few years ago, I am taking my friends from Atlanta to the game on Sunday. My last trip to NYC was probably not long after 9-11. Why is Yankee Stadium so famous? I would guess it is the legacy of the great Yankee players over the years: Ruth Gehrig, Dimaggio, Mantle, Berra, Jeter, Rivera, and now Aaron Judge from Fresno State. It may also be famous since it is, after all, the Big Apple. The original Yankee Stadium (built for $2.4 million) was the home of the Yankees from 1923 to 2008. It is often referred to as the "House that Ruth Built." It was the first stadium in North America with three tiers. Other events and sports were held here including boxing, college and pro football, soccer ice hockey, and music concerts (Madonna, Paul McCartney). While not the oldest or best stadium in Major League Baseball, Yankee Stadium might be the most famous. The new Yankee Stadium opened in 2009. The iconic facade of old Yankee Stadium was replicated in the new stadium. Monument Park, located beyond the
centerfield fence honors past Yankees. The stadium seats 52,000 in three tiers. In 2009, the Yankees were able to replicate the 1923 team, by winning the World Series in their first year at the new stadium. As a young kid, watching the "Game of the Week with Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese on Saturday mornings was a highlight. And most televised games were the Yankees. So, I naturally became a Yankee fan. When the Angels joined the American League, they played in both old Wrigley Field (Los Angeles) and Dodger Stadium. My brother and I saw our Yankee heroes, like Mantle, Maris and Berra play. Later, my Dad took me to Yankee games there. Baseball was my first love in sports, mainly because it was on television when I was a young boy. And the old Yankee Stadium was featured most every Saturday. Yankee Stadium is a 25-minute subway ride from midtown Manhattan. My Mom told me that she and my Dad walked to the stadium from Manhattan when they visited New York City! The New York Yankees Museum is located on the lower level. The stadium has a Hard Rock Cafe, among other eateries. If you are a
true sports fan, attending a game here is as memorable as Fenway and Wrigley. We will see the Yankees (fading fast) play the Milwaukee Brewers. Neither of us are Yankee fans. Kenbob (from Hotlanta) is a Braves fan, and I am a Giants fan. But I relish (get it? The hot dog at the ballpark) the chance to see my buddy Kenbob, a true Southern gentleman who does not have a redneck or trump button. I still remember so fondly visiting him in Atlanta for the first time in the 80's. He greets me at the airport with a cooler filled with beer in his trunk! Gotta love the guy!
