technically no longer in Vilnius but I figure that since i just got here in Warsaw that I would tell you about my time there. I would have to say that it's not as good as Riga, but only because the place I stayed wasn't as nice. I would still have to say that its a good time, though. Beer is really cheap and I had a filet mignon dinner with two beers and a dessert for like 12 dollars! Went to a small town about 30 min away called Trakai. Really great little town with a castle in the middle of a lake. The castle was kinda lame, the Russians destroyed it in the 17th century and then the soviets rebuilt it in the 60's, so not really an authentic castle. I guess that i'm ... read more

Vilnius, city of cobbled streets and numerous churches. Architecture from every influence; Gothic, Romantic, you name it it's here. Watch the world go by outside one of the delightful cafes in the old town. Gaze in amazement as impossibly tall thin women manage to negotiate the cobbled streets wearing impossibly tall thin heeled shoes (even in winter) I arrived here on a wet and cold evening, and found my apartment, which was tucked away in a typical old-town location, narrow cobbled street and tall building. I'd reccommend picking up a copy of the now essential In Your Pocket guide, at 5 litas. There are other guides given out free of charge along the same lines as In Your Pocket such as Exploring Vilnius, which can be found in hotel lobbies and tourist information centres. The whole ... read more

Bus rule number one If there exists one rule about travelling in buses besides rule number one which says that you always arrive later than expected, it is that you arrive too early that one time you definitely don't want to arrive early - as experienced in windy Vilnius. Our night bus from Warsaw which we happened to catch after a dramatic last minute run through town was all but leaving late. And there was nothing which could delay us. Traffic was running smoothly and the border crossing was a matter of minutes. So it happened that we arrived in Vilnius at 4 am already instead of the scheduled 6 am arrival. (We had a suspicion though that they had known it all along but didn't want to tell.) Late March mornings in Lithuania can be ... read more

Nida, Keeping with the nature of our group, we happened to discover that some guys were thinking it would be cool to spend a weekend on the split as a kind of ‘farewell’ bonding event. Once the news broke, everybody piled on and it turned into a guy’s trip to the outer edge of Lithuania. Why is it that we always seem to plan these things at the END of the semester? Well, besides the fact that it was below freezing when we got here, it may have made for a better time if we had snuck off as a group early on. We had a few dominant personalities on the trip, and this made it difficult to get to know guys that didn’t win out in the extravert contest until the small group dynamic allowed ... read more

E-mail sent almost a year ago, has the combo of pictures, text and Country info at the bottom. This is the same one, but with a bit more info. The other message randomly sent itself before I was done. Greeting from Kliapeda, Lithuania. Klaipeda is the third largest city in the country, is on the coast, and will be my hometown for the next four months. Since this is the first news of my trip I have been able to send out, let me backtrack a bit. The flight in was nice, and staff greeted me right at baggage claim when I arrived in Vilnius (always nice when one arrives in the middle of nowhere and things go as planned.) The couple of days we spent in Vilnius were very nice. It had snowed for the ... read more

The following entries are from/during my semester in Lithuania. I have copied some information from the program website so as to place the entries into somewhat of a timeline and to give some background info on the program. Tuesday. Went to Ignalina, part of a beautiful national park about 100km from Vilnius. Missed the early train we had intended to catch so caught one at 11am. The park is truely beautiful, wild forests, fantastic lakes numerous walks and places to hire bikes, boats etc. Sara and I spent most of the day eating blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries that grow wild. So many blueberries - I've never seen anything like it. We ate blueberries until our teeth and toungues were blue. Walked around lakes and forests and had a wonderful day, headed back to the train station in time for the 20:30 train back to Vilnius. We discovered that the 20:30 train was actually at 19:30 (our mistake). So we decided to hitch back to Vilnius, no luck hitching after an hour and it ... read more

So it happened again - events and things happened quickly and the blog suffered. The blog ceased to exist - so here I am writing about 5 weeks after the events (again). Vilnius lies in the mainly flat and forested countryside of Lithunia, situated close to the Russian border in the South-East of the country. Founded in the 1320's by Duke Gediminas after a dream the city has lots of historic buildings, and statues. The old town is bigger than that found in either Tallin or Riga, and has a more open rambling feel than either of the other two baltic capitals, but has narrow streeted ghettos and archways in aboundance. Wednesday I decided to stay at the old town hostel - though to be honest it is the only centrally based hostel in the city. ... read more
