In 2005, restless, stuck in a boring job and with 30 fast approaching, I handed in my notice, rented out my flat and, together with my partner Christiane, set off to see some of the world. Three months later, almost by accident, we ended up in Mongolia. As the years went by and other memories faded, the 16 unscheduled days in Mongolia remained startlingly fresh. But in 2010 I sensed them slipping into the distance, and decided on an experiment. I would try to write about them, and see just how much I could recall. In the event I was deluged, and my experiment became a task of sifting the meaningful from the minutiae. I hope I succeeded.
Mongolia is a fascinating place to visit, and I heartily recommend it to anyone. If you're thinking of going, have already been, or are just the slightest bit curious, then you may find my book enjoyable. And even if you don't, I'm donating half the proceeds to Mongolian charities, so you're money's not entirely wasted.
