Today we decided to visit El Corte Ingles (a giant department store like Maceys) where we had a very nice lunch at the top we a scenic view out the window, then walk along Las Ramblas, a boulevard crammed with stores, booths, entertainers, and lots of other people. Most of the entertainers were the "living statue" type, something that seems to be taking hold in alot of the tourist spots. People suit up as some character (anything from a knight, to a goddess, to the creature from Alien), usually all one color as if made of gold, bronze, or silver, and even paint their faces, hands, and hair to match. Some of them will stand perfectly still for several minutes until they have an audience or at least an especially curious tourist, then they move, often ... read more

Sorry, still no way to upload photos. The computer in the hostal doesn´t have a memory card reader and there are few internet shops around, none of which have wireless access for my handheld. Will try again at Renfe train station before we leave Barcelona. Our first full day in Barcelona. The first stop was La Sagrada Familia. Unfortunately they were working on alot of it. Apparently this wonderful building is always being added to, and would have been much nicer without all the scaffolding. The architectural style is amazing, with pillars like trees and "flourishes" everywhere such as gargoyles, grapes, birds, etc. After a brief walk around the ground floor, I decided to climb the tower/spire stairs instead of taking the elevator. The stairs are free, much more interesting, and several hundred meters long/high! The ... read more

The flight on RyanAir from Dublin to Barcelona went well...once we boarded... 1/2 hour late, but we still arrived in Girona/Barcelona Airport 1/2 hour ahead of schedule. Most of the folks waiting for the flight to Barcelona were Spanish, and acted alot like Italians... a big herd vying for head of the line. We didn´t try to fight them, just sitting down, but got lucky. They were lined up 50 or so deep and 2 or 3 wide in front of the gate...when the airline staff showed up just before the flight, they told everyone (in English) that they had to line up in the queue areas of either section 1-99 or 100-199. We stood up, walked quickly to the correct "corral" and were like 8th in line, while the "herd" fought to get in the ... read more

It was a long but uneventful drive from Kilarney to Rossenvael (sp) for the ferry to Inis Mor (big island in Gealic). We made it in plenty of time for the 12:00 ferry. One word of advice, don´t park at the 1st car park if you can avoid it. There is another one alot closer to the ferry. It was fun sitting on the ferry watching all the folks who´d parked at the further car park and were close to the departure time run to get the ferry! It only took about 1/2 an hour to get to the island. The island was just as quaint and old-fashioned as you read. After dragging our luggage up the hill to Mainistir Hostel (which was alot further than we´d expected, so take a mini'bus if its in your ... read more

After a pleasant trip from Cork, we found Kilarney International Youth Hostel without too much trouble (only one wrong turn!). We checked in about 9:30am, stored our luggage and bought 2 Ring of Kerry Tour tickets @16.50 Euros each. The sights were awesome! We stopped once to watch a presentation by an Irish shepherd, explaining the different types of sheep and demonstrating how his sheepdogs work. They were something and the whole thing was very informative and only 4 Euros. We stopped for lunch at the Scariff Inn. The food was good, but very expensive (13 Euros for a small bowl of soup, a small salad, and water). After lunch we stopped several times for picture-taking and rest/shopping. Got back to hostel about 5:30pm. Bus is called by the hostel, so very easy to do, picking ... read more

Cork: Sheilas Hostel was OK... sort of run of the mill, although very clean and well appointed. After checking in and buying a parking disc for the car (1.80 Euros for 2 hours, and you're supposed buy a new one every 2 hours which sort of limits where you can go! I just bought 2 and scratched off 2 different time periods on them.) we walked down to the bus station and bought tickets on Bus Eiarran to Blarney. You can take a 3 hour tour but that is restrictive and cost a bit more than the 5.10 Euros round trip ticket on regular bus. We got to Blarney and paid our 8 Euros for admission. Again, a great tour of a cool place. I kissed the Blarney Stone, but Manoli bowed out. You had to ... read more

Cashel: Found Cashel Lodge with no problem. Very clean, nice, and private. Arrived too late to tour Rock of Cashel, so walked around town... whole town, twice in an hour or so. Had a good dinner at Hannigans. Rock of Cashel at night is quite pretty. Next day (2 June) had enough time to tour Rock and then eat lunch at The Bake House. Excellent food and prices, and baked goods baked right there! After lunch, we headed to Cork to see the Blarney stone. Getting to Cork was OK and uneventful, but once there we got lost and took almost an hour to find Sheilas Hostel. Actually started to get used to driving on the left, from the rigth side of the car and making turns into the opposite lane than usual!... read more

Waterford: Got car from Airport in Dublin (Budget), and headed to Waterford to visit Waterford Crystal Factory before going to Cashel. Tour was great and not expensive, but the crystal sure was! Manoli bought a cute vase that she had engraved there. We also got a photo of us holding a cheap (just a few thousand bucks!) piece of crystal. I'd recommend this tour anyone.... read more

After some shopping..and resting, we headed out to Taylor's Irish Night. Unfortunately, we got off the bus at the wrong place and had to walk a couple miles, finally catch a Taxi, but arrived almost on time. The food was great and the entertainment even better! The Merry Ploughboys sure could play and sing (Leon would have loved this!) and the Taylor's Irish dancers were also great. Somehow or other, I let Manoli convince me to accept the offer to dance with one of the young ladies (pic included). Wednesday, we took the Tour Bus around Dublin, and then stopped at a few places. The Guinness Storehouse tour was excellent, and eventhough the complimentary beer was probably very good, we didn't care for it. On the other hand, the Old Jameson Distellery tour was good, and ... read more

Well, we made it to Dublin. Sending this from hostel pc, since I killed both the batteries on my handheld. Will try to recharge some before show tonight (Taylor's Irish Night Dance, Song and dinner) and maybe get a pic there.... read more
