We are keenly aware that for most, South Korea is not on the top of most people’s travel lists. And we will volunteer that this list used to include us as well. So how does one make the decision to hop on a plane and travel some 7700 air miles to visit? Simple…..you’ve got friends living there and you’ve been invited! Our friends Denise and Galen have been living in Seoul since July. Gale... Read Full Entry

Time has been good to South Korea
So, almost 30 years ago, I traveled for business to South Korea on multiple occasions. As you two know, I love the cultures in that region of the world. I must say I am happy to read your impressions of how clean and progressive you found things. That was not the case when I was there. They were still struggling to get to what you find there today. The pride of the people was so obvious and hard not to admire because general living conditions were still on the mend. I look forward to the food blog to come next. P.S. - Lisa's oil painting arrived yesterday. Lot's of good memories attached to that beautiful oil. :)

Dave here....an amazingly clean and progressive place. The country has come very far in the last 70 or so years. On to Jeju Island for more adventure.....

fascinating
This was a particularly interesting blog to me because it depicts such an amazing and different culture. How nice to have had such accommodating tour guides!

Good hearing from you Billie. We were excited to travel here and experience the culture. The people are so kind. It was great having friends who could show us their new city. We've really enjoyed our time here.

On US soldier and on travelling in business class
The US soldier who last year crossed the border to North Korea at the DMZ was released after negotiations by staff from the Swedish Embassy. The US doesn't have diplomatic relations with North Korea. Instead all connections on embassy level between USA and North Korea goes through the Swedish embassy. I actually get to travel business class every now and then when economy class is overbooked. I took me years to understand why they so often pick me to get upgraded instead of someone else. I believe that it's because of my name. My given name is Åke. The first letter, Å, doesn't exist in the English alphabet. It is automatically transcribed into a double A. So on airline bookings I get the name "Aake Dahlloef". The passenger lists are probably in alphabetical order by given name, making me mostly the first name on the list. When they upgrade passengers they probably go from the top and work themselves down. I have travelled business class maybe 10 times and never paid anything extra for it. I know Dave, life isn't fair. /Ake

Thanks for sharing the information about the Americans release. Your luck with being upgraded to business class is amazing. We may need to change our names. LOL. It is a wonderful world up there and we will long for it in the future.

S Korea
How fortunate that you have a local guide to hold your hands and help you to get the most of your time in Seoul. I was last there back in 1986 and recall it was a clean and somewhat Americanised City, but I was on business and regrettably had little time for exploration. Your record of your visit is a delight to read.

S. Korea
David, it is great hearing from you. We do feel fortunate to explore the city with friends and easily take us to the things we wanted to visit. The bus and subway system is well organized so it is not difficult to get around. We enjoyed staying in a non-tourist part of town where we were the only white people. The locals enjoyed helping us... such kind people.

Memories
Interesting to see Korea from a tourist perspective. During our three years in China we didn't get to visit Korea but did see it from Dandong on the NorthEast border of China (the end of the Great wall). One of our favourite Chinese contacts was a big fan of Korea and Korean food so we did experience some of what I think we will hear about in the next blog. Interesting similarities and differences to what we experienced in our Chinese travels. paw

Memories
I would imagine my tourist view is entirely different than the experience you had. I would love to read a blog of your three years in China and your take on the views you had of the situation.

Korean Memories
Ah, so wonderful to read this blog! Not only does it bring back amazing memories for me from my own trip to Seoul a few years ago, it is also wonderful to see you both in your element and travelling again! The Business Class trip looks amazing, and a great birthday treat. So glad you got to see Suwon, which was on my own list but due to lack of time, I couldn't quite make it. And the Yoido Church! I'm so touched that you also went there and thought of me ☺️ I'm glad to read that you were able to still do part of the DMZ trip, even though the JSA wasn't available. There is so much to learn and take in at this very unusual part of the world. A wonderful read! 😁

Korean Memories
We are enjoying being on the road again and following in your footsteps. The business class was a delight. We learned a great deal and enjoyed the DMZ tour even though the JSA was not open. The War Memorial Museum was well done. Thanks for commenting.

Thank you for following along and commenting. Korea is a good experience and we''l tell you about all the wonderful food soon.

Great to read of your experiences. You have seen more of Korea than I did in about 20 visits, but there again, I was there for business not pleasure! I'm glad you enjoyed the experience at the DMZ. When I was there many years ago now, guards on either side were almost touching noses and eyeballing each other, but never a smile!

Great experiences
We are laughing at your kind note. Yes, we did see a lot but a visit is far different than a business trip. The DMZ was interesting and I'm glad we were able to go visit.

Great Entry!
I, too, will fly business class someday!

So lovely to be visiting your friends in their new home. And yes, it's a treat when you can learn about the public transport from a local rather than trying to figure it out on the run! We look forward to getting back to Seoul one day and exploring it as well as you have :)

We liked and connected with Seoul and imagine a lot of it had to do with our friends having so much insider knowledge. Plus the people are so incredibly nice. I forgot to mention the heated bench seats while waiting for the bus were a dream.

South Korea
Not on any of our wish lists, but maybe it should be. I always find fascination in tales of the border zone. Tunnels, etc..

South Korea
... Maybe it should be. South Korea has far more to offer than I was expecting. It is a clean, neat and orderly society. Well thought out. People who are kind and respect your space. It was a lovely travel experience.
