We flew back to Johannesburg where we rented a car for 3 days. We
immediately headed out to our game lodge in the Sabi Sands Reserve next
to Kruger Park. We had a tight schedule as it was a 5 hour drive
and we had 6 hours from the airport to get to the Game Lodge in time
for our 4 pm Safari. We couldn´t believe that Thrifty Rent a car
did not have a map for us. We finally found a poor map at one of
the other rental car agencies and promptly headed out on the huge
freeway that took us to our destination. What a maze of roads is
the freeways in Johannesburg - very confusing. We were so pleased
to finally get out of the city area and enroute on our freeway.
The freeway narrowed down to a 2 way narrow paved road with no
shoulder. The speed limit remained at 120 Km and although I kept
to the speed limit cars raced past us often with heart stopping risks
as they passed. After 2 hours on this road we stopped for a bite
to eat and discovered we were headed in the exact opposite direction of
the camp. Needless to say we missed our 4 pm Safari where they
saw 2 leopards mating. Thank god we had 3 other amazing Game
drives in South Africa and 7 more in Kenya!
