“There is a visitor in your training room” is what I was told when I arrived on site this morning… so I apprehensively walked towards the door thinking who could it be? A few of the lads had dressed Annie up – it was “Gangsta Annie and her crew” that was waiting for me, it was brilliant.
Today we talked about medical conditions, including Diabetes and Epilepsy. I have picked these out because these are the ones that had the most interesting discussions.
Diabetes led on to a big discussion about healthy eating, many had not realised that diabetes could be linked to poor diet. Diabetes is on the rise in Africa due to the big rise in fried food being available, a few suggested but we eat yam and plaintain – when asked how they cook it they explained that it was deep fried. “but it tastes so good!” they said. Another said “but in the movies British people eat fried food” I told him we are no better and that people in the UK do eat fatty foods, it’s a matter of personal choice, it was more shocking that they just didn’t know that fatty foods were
so bad they just assumed because it was a vegetable it didn’t matter how it was cooked.
“its not contagious? Are you sure?” yep im talking about epilepsy, in Nigeria many people will not assist someone who has had a seizure, the biggest fear is that you will catch it from them, I assured them it was contagious, they seemed to take my word for it except for one guy who questioned me about it being demonic.
During a break the group asked to see pictures of my family, I showed them Clair’s wedding pictures - my sister is beautiful, my brother is so young and fine and my mother is too beautiful for my father apparently. In face Sherafat said “mmmm that woman is too beautiful for that man, if your mother comes to Nigeria I will snatch her for my daddy he needs a new wife!” The others said that my dad looks like a gentle and kind man. The ladies were highly impressed with Gran, they said she was absolutely glamorous especially in her heels like the queen.
Raymond (driver) took me to a local market today at lunchtime, it was an amazing experience.
Raymond stayed with me at all times as I walked around all the stalls selling food, shoes and scarves, ladies were sitting around chatting and playing with babies or listening to music and dancing it was great to see the real lagos, I do not have any pictures as I do not want to take my camera into these areas incase I get mugged, as sadly this is still a possibility.
I have enjoyed today and as an experienced lagos visitor I have agreed to take a first timer out for dinner tonight (with Raymond driving of course) he wants to go to a bar so we are off to a local expats bar that I have been to before, Raymond will be waiting outside for me so all will be well
Take Care
