I'm back home. I've been home for 2 days and finally able to function enough to make a to do list and start unpacking. Finishing this blog is top on my 'to do' list. If this last post doesn't get out today, it never will. I did start it at some point so here's what I got... The night we left Belfast I couldn't sleep trying to decide what to do in Dublin. One last night spent with Rick to make a plan for the next day and half.. We made it to Dublin from Belfast with only a quick rest stop along the way. Don was in his element here and gave us the grand tour of Dublin. He's very proud of this city. We went to Phoenix Park for a drive by of the ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Split May 29th 2024

Today was our first day we weren't on a dead run and we could wake up at our leisure and not be rushed! Our apartment was in a great location right in the Old Town part of the city, so we just had to walk out our door and history was everywhere. Split is a part of the Dalmatian coastline on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea. If you find Rome on a map and cast your eyes east across Italy and the Adriatic Sea, you will find Split. Split was founded in the 3rd or 2nd BC and became the site of the Palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. It then became a Byzantine city and later became part of the Republic of Venice. Then it was caught in the middle of the struggle ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France May 28th 2024

The French Open has started. Now that I am watching on TV, I wish I was there! Oh well, maybe next year. The crowds here are what makes this Slam so much fun!!! Last year (2022) at the French Open in Paris: No, we are not celebrating a 16th birthday. Maybe some multiple of 16. I am referring to the 16th Arrondissement (of twenty) of Paris. There are twenty in Paris, for those of you unfamiliar. The 16th includes the Arch de Triomphe, and several well-known museums. But as you are aware, I am not here for the museums. I have only one reason for being here, the famous French Open. The 16th is rather a high rent area or one of high society's favorite places, comparable to Chelsea and Kensington in London, or Charlottenburg in ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hamburg » Hamburg May 28th 2024

Guten Tag (I think that was Hello, or Good Day) from Germany. We arrived in Hamburg this morning and the ship was scheduled to be here literally all day. There’s a reason for that – the main attraction are excursions to Berlin. When we booked this cruise, that was one of a few key things which really interested us. Unfortunately, we misunderstood how far it was between the cities and that it would take about 2 1/2 hours on a bus in each direction. The excursions were listed from 9-13 hours in duration. So, in our thoughts we were expecting to get to explore Berlin, but reality makes it more exhausting than we can handle. We did not go after all. That being said, there are no excursion here that were Easy – even just around ... read more

After the usual morning rituals, we got the 10.05 train to Linthal-Braunwald Station and then onto the funicular up to Braunwald. This funicular is very steep indeed going up to 1256m. It does not flatten out as I had expected so we trudged on uphill through the village that isn't really a village. It is carless and spread out up the hillside above the station. We figured that a coffee sounded pretty good so we went on a hunt for a cafe that was open. We followed a wanderweg until we found a sign that indicated a hotel with a restaurant. This was the Crystal Hotel near the seilbahn going up to Grotzenbuel. We ordered some coffees with bread and continued on a path she had indicated that we should take. This trail was absolutely spectacular ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Sligo » Sligo May 28th 2024

Phew, we had a few things listed on the itinerary today as potential sightseeing from/around Sligo. We knew there weren’t enough hours in the day for all of them so we had to choose what we would do. The short list consisted of the dramatic cliffs at Sliabh Liag (Slieve League), a Yeat’s Country Drive, Enniskillen, National Trust properties Castle Coole and Florence Court House. The decision was made to drive 242 kilometres to see MORE cliffs! We headed north out of Sligo on the N15. From Rathcormack the N15 ran concurrent with the Wild Atlantic Way. To drive ALL of the VVVV would take months as there are so many turn outs to heads and points and beaches. I’m sure that they are all points of exceptional beauty but … we can’t do them all. ... read more

Today was a travel day. We were leaving The Balmoral House Hotel and London. We would return to Heathrow and fly to Split, Croatia. This was going to be a whole new adventure as I have not been to any of the areas we visit for the next two and a half weeks, except Rome. We started the day with our full English breakfast. We went down to the breakfast room earlier so there was no waiting today. We bought the kitchen staff a big box of biscuits (cookies) from Harrods. They were so appreciative!! We hugged and said our goodbyes and headed back to our rooms to pack and repack for our flight. I stopped in the office after breakfast just to visit with Flavio. Another couple came in and I apologized and said I ... read more

Day 1 – May 25/26 Our European adventure started on time when Airway Transit picked us up and took us to Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ). Even with a slowdown, with all three East bound lanes packed on Highway 401, which at many times is akin to a moving parking lot, we arrived in plenty of time to get our luggage tags, clear security and take a long walk to our gate area. We found a place to sit and enjoy a snack before our 8:10 pm departure. Plane loading and departure were on time and our flight across the Atlantic was smooth and speedy; we arrived 40 minutes ahead of schedule – there was a strong tailwind. Once we cleared customs and immigration and collected our bags, we were met by a representative of AMA Cruises ... read more

Day 2 – May 27 Overnight it rained and threatened rain all day but that is something to be taken in stride. Our internal clocks seemed to have reset fairly smoothly, and we were up early, ready for the day, breakfasted and on the bus for our “Little Big City” tour. This amounted to an hour driving tour around the city followed by a 1.5 hour walking tour of the old city. I am always amazed at the driving abilities of bus drivers as they navigate 50 passenger coaches through narrow winding hilly traffic congested streets without any serious misadventures. Our driver today was no exception. After our drive around the city, which included a stop by Lake Zurich, we were dropped off in the old section of the central core for an1.5-hour walking tour.
