8th Aug: Today was a travel day so not much occurring. My train wasn't until the afternoon so I had a leisurely morning. I headed down to breakfast to see what was on offer today. I was glad to see that there was more belly pork today. My first plate consisted of belly pork, a boiled egg, youtiao, a dumpling, cheung fun, siu mai and some stir fried greens. It was all really nice. My second plate was basically the same as I had enjoyed it all except I swapped the egg and cheung fun for more dumplings and a baozi. I headed to the station. I didn't have to wait long for a bus and it only took about 15-20 minutes to get to the station. I was really early so sat outside reading, getting ... read more

I made it down to breakfast slightly earlier. There was a bit more choice and while it was nice to see new things on offer, I was a little disappointed some of the offerings I had enjoyed the day before weren't there. I loaded up my first plate with a rather large amount of stir fried greens, a boiled egg, sausage, youtiao (fried dough stick), and some fried veggie dumplings. The sausage was a cheapie processed one so pretty meh. The dumplings, boiled egg and youtiao were good, but the best bit was the stir fried greens. So tasty. As much as I like eating traditional Chinese breakfast food, I enjoy eating what is in my opinion non traditional foods too. I am definitely not one of those people believe certain foods have to be eaten ... read more

5th Aug: Didn't do much today as it was a travel day. Lazy morning before heading to the train station to get the train to Shantou. I found out what the problem with my bag was. I had an aerosol can of dry shampoo in there and it is over the aerosol limit of 150 ml. Well you learn something new everyday. I never knew that there a limit for these kind of things on trains in China. The train journey was fine. It took about an hour and fifteen minutes to reach Shantou. Stepping out of the train station and back into the heat was hard and I was sweating by the time I got to the bus stop, which was not far. I had to wait about 10-15 minutes for the bus, but it ... read more

Up and off to Honghaiwan (红海湾), which means Red Bay in English. Quite the pretty name. I had originally wanted to stay in this area, but couldn't find out if the hotel I wanted to stay at accepted foreigners and so decided to make my life easier and stay near the train station as I was only in Shanwei for two nights and didn't want to have to schlepp too far with all my stuff. I miss travelling light. Hopefully, I can correct that for my next trip. I first took the bus to the train station, which was quick as I didn't have to wait long and the journey is really quick too. Here I had to change buses to the 116, which I found no problem. The river was on the bus taking a ... read more

After the best night's sleep I have had in a long time, I ordered some breakfast. Since it would be my last meal in Shenzhen, I ordered from a chain that I knew was good. I loved the hotel's delivery robot. It's so convenient bringing your take away to your room and also means the delivery drivers aren't wasting time either. I had ordered Cheung Fun, which are steamed Cantonese rice noodle rolls. They come stuffed with a variety of different fillings and I got some stuffed with egg, beef, shrimp and vegetables. After having some in Sanya and not enjoying them too much due to the sauce, it took me a while to order them in Shenzhen, but the chain I order from has a really good sauce, so I'm a little sad I missed ... read more

My final day in Huizhou. I felt like I had seen pretty much all there was to see by the end of yesterday, apart from one section of the lake. So after a leisurely start to the day, I headed off to take a look around that part. I walked back through Fengzhu Park taking pictures of some things I had missed the day before because I had been a bit too tired by that point. The stone boat reminded me of the Summer Palace in Beijing, which is one of my favourite places to go in Beijing. I also spent more time photographing the lotus flowers, they never fail to impress me. When I got to the other side of the lake, I took the path in the opposite direction to the one I had ... read more

I had grand plans of getting up super early and heading out to beat the heat, but of course that didn't happen. Once I was eventually sorted I headed out for a wander around the lake. First stop was to take some photos of the alley I was staying in. It's really cute with all the lights, lanterns and murals on the walls. Then down to the lake. I liked the figurines that are there to get your photo taken with. I totally missed them the night before. It was nice to see the lake in the day time. It looked pretty, large and peaceful. Since it was so hot, there weren't too many people about and those that were by the lake were sheltering under the shade of the trees. The security guard sitting napping ... read more

Finally, off to visit Huizhou, a smaller city that is close to Shenzhen. Even though Huizhou is really close getting there is a bit of a pain in the backside. I opted for the slower cheaper route of subway and bus. Subway was nice and simple just ride it to the end of line 3 and then transfer to the bus. Although the bus took just over 2 hours and wasn’t the most comfortable as it was just a regular bus, not a fancy coach or anything, it was actually less faff than getting the train and having to go through all the security and ID checks. It was also a bargainous 9 RMB. China isn’t too cheap any more but there are still some good deals about. The journey was uneventful and I just watched ... read more

A quick day trip to Hong Kong. This time I took the train from Shenzhen North Station to West Kowloon Station. The train journey was really quick, only 20 minutes and I like the ticketless travel. However, the journey was really boring as it was mainly through tunnels so nothing to see and Hong Kong immigration took forever as it was so busy. Also West Kowloon Station isn't directly connected to the MTR so we had to walk through a mall for about 5-10 minutes to reach it. Subway to Hong Kong station was nice and quick and from there we walked up to Central. Although I have been to Hong Kong a few times and visited quite a bit of it, there are always new places to discover, even in areas and districts that I ... read more

23rd Jun: I think I must have woken everyone in the guesthouse up by going to the bathroom at 5 am. The perks of a communal bathroom and old, heavy doors that make a lot of noise when you open them. I went back to sleep for a bit and was woken again by the rain pouring down outside. I hoped that it was just a short shower and not last all day as I had planned to go to the beach. Once up and sorted, my first stop was breakfast. I headed to the breakfast place I'd frequented last time for ease. It was a lot quieter than last time. I ordered a bit of a random combination of sweet soymilk, fried egg and Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings). And who says only English food is beige, ... read more
