travel to Gambella?

I'm thinking about traveling to Gambella. Has anybody been there? What is the situation there like right now

I just got back from volunteering in Ethiopia for 6 months and am planning on going back in March, 08.
I have a few friends that used to live in a refugee camp in Gambella and I would really likie to travel there.
Have any of you been there? What was the security situation like when you visited? Does the Ethiopian government allow free travel to/around the area? I've noticed that their is much conflicting and confusing information about Gambella. What were your feelings about the situation there? How do you feel the people's standard of living (water availability, security, education, etc.)compares to other parts of Ethiopia such as towns in North Wollo?

Thanks for any advice!
