UK citizen hoping to work in Chile.... any advice from someone with first hand experience?
What I really need is some information from anyone who has experience
in travelling or working in Chile. I plan to go to Chile in March
2011, straight from New Zealand, although I am a British citizen. My
girlfriend is Chilean and I want to find out my options for working
and living here. I have never been to South America and so don't
really know what to expect although I could really do with being able
to work there and for a wage.
If anyone could provide any information... no matter how small I would
be very grateful.

Reply to this You cannot work in Chile without a work visa. Some language schools will help you get it but then you are tied to a specific employer as you can only legally work for them. You would need some sort of language teaching qualification and there are many people looking to do the same thing. The wages are very low but if you are living with your gf's family you could get by. Chile is not cheap. Any other job you will need someone willing to hire you, good levels of Spanish and qualifications.
Reply to this There is a great program if you want to teach english in Chile. It is called teachingchile.com. Just go to the web page and you will find all the info you need. The program helps you get a visa and gets you job. I am currently in the program so if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.
Reply to this I just applied to teachingchile, attracted by the promise of a visa and a job, but I'm already very familiar with parts of Chile and have friends there, plus almost everyone seems to recommend going there and looking for a job instead of using a program. Tell me how teachingchile is working for you, please. I don't want to get mixed up with something that treats me badly.

Hi, I have exactly the same issue as you and I am wondering if you went to Chile in the end? and how it worked out for you? I am also British and my boyfriend is Chilean. I have almost finished my CELTA course so that I can teach English as a foreign language. Can I just turn up on a tourist visa, find a job and then they can sponsor me? Are the wages really that low for an English teacher? I will be staying with my boyfriend's family and I'm not expecting to earn a fortune..but I want to be able to be comfortable! Any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated!!! I am hoping to go there next month!
