I am doing a RTW trip and due to be in South America in about July for about 3 mts. Chile was part of my trip but should I avoid it or spend less time in Chile now?
Why would you spend less time? It will be winter, so the north will have better weather. Skiing is possible very near to Santiago if you like snow sports. If you are thinking of earthquake damage, there isn't anywhere a tourist might want to go in Chile which is not accessible right now.
Reply to this Thanks for Fiona how long should I spend there? I do not wish to ski so what else should I do?
Reply to this The north is nice in winter, not too hot. San Pedro de Atacama is in the north and a prime tourist destination with some very good deals right now. Go before the other tourists discover they were silly to cancel. You could also go on a tour to Uyuni from SPdA or to Salta, in Argentina. Although the tour to Uyuni is cold, cold, cold it is also some spectacular scenery. Salta is a nice little city with plenty to see around it.
If you are flying out of Santiago, then you should spend a day or two here even if it is winter. We get quite a lot of sunny days in winter. You could do a day trip to Valparaíso on the coast. The Andes surrounding Santiago in winter look very beautiful and it is an easy city to negociate.
Reply to this Oh thanks for all your help I am flying out of Santiago so will be spending some time there.
Reply to this Chile is a great place! Check out my blog for some pictures. There is a lot to do there. Check out some travel sites, they are helpful if your just spending a shorter amount of time there. If you want to spend the money, guidebooks are great. I did a 4 month study abroad program there and the country has a lot to offer. Enjoy and eat some empanadas for me!
