Country number 4, Bolivia!
What better way to enter the country by spending some time at Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world at 3800 masl that's almost equally split between Peru and Bolivia.
We decided that the Peru side would be too touristy and heard that a small town called Copacabana (not to be confused with the Brazilian beach) was a more idyllic and relaxed place to be. It surely didn't disappoint!
It coincided with our 3 year wedding anniversary so we treated ourselves to the iconic Los Olas accommodation with rooms that have no doubt been inspired and built after a trip to Barcelona accompanied with a sensational view of the bay. We reckon we had the best accommodation (each room being a different design and size, including a sea shell!) and had only booked two nights but five minutes later after checking in, we decided another night was required. It seems like it would be expensive for what we had but it was only £40 per night! Anywhere else, this place would probably be at least three times the price! Did I also mention the two natural lawnmower alpacas that tend to the lawns daily or
the spa that looks out in to the billions of stars or our room with four beds (two double beds), two bathrooms, three hamocks, a wood burner and kitchen?
I guess what I'm trying to say is that we really loved the place and if you're in the area, we'd definitely recommend staying there!
We spent those three days relaxing, taking in the views, visiting the town and buying food at the local market and cooking meals for only £2!
Bolivia is certainly the cheapest country we've been to on this trip so far! And yes, we did take advantage of the spa at night on our anniversary!
Finally the time had come to move on from our newly acquired relaxing and lazy lifestyle to just up the road, or waterway, to Isla del Sol, only an hour and a half away by boat.
Isla del Sol is said to be the birthplace of the sun (now ticking 'visiting the birthplace of the sun' off my bucket list).
The whole time we were there, it lived up to its name! There was plenty of sun to be enjoyed.
There are two islands that can be visited, the other being
the much smaller Isla del Luna.
Isla del Sol is split in to north and south and unfortunately there is a 'war' between them in regards to tourism and the north is not accessible to tourists. Previously you could catch the boat to the north and walk to the south over a few hours.
Isla del Sol is hilly and that gives it an advantage of providing some spectacular views from various lookouts and hill top restaurants. There is plenty of accommodation options and we had one with an amazing view looking over the lake with the mountain range of the Cordilleras Real in the background!
On the full day we were there, we did a walk that looped around through the islands hills and back around to Yumani for lunch with a view! The amazing thing was that we did not cross a single person for the whole two and a half hour walk. It was strange to walk through deserted villages with only the echoed eee aww sounds of the donkeys from below.
There must be something going on with the donkeys on the island as twice we could have been trampled by rogue stampeding donkeys!
We were really impressed with Lake Titicaca and really enjoyed relaxing and taking in the amazing views. It was definitely another highlight of our trip!
