Today was supposed to be a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. It turned out instead to be a result day in Buenos Aires. We were scheduled for the 8:30 ferry, which meant we had to be up at 5 to get ready and get to the terminal in time. The alarm went off at 4:30, and it kept going off. When I asked Jerry to hit the snooze, he said from a dead sleep “I am trying.” He was not trying he was dreaming that he was hitting the snooze button, finally he did manage to wake up enough to hit it. In the meantime, my back up alarms did not go off, it helps if you use am instead of pm when you set it. The alarm went off again, it was now 5:15, Jerry hit the snooze again. As I lay there it dawned on me that every part of my body hurt, then I fell back asleep, by 6:30 it was just to late to make the ferry, so I told Jerry turn the alarm off, I closed the drapes to keep the rising sun out and we slept until 10:30.
The concierge, through some
magic was able to reschedule our ferry tickets for Tuesday, so we will still be going to Uruguay, just not when we originally planned.
The rest of the day was pretty chill, with nothing now planned for the day, we took our time getting up. The only thing on our agenda was lunch. We thought this would be a good opportunity to check out Café Tortoni (A Buenos Aires institution). It is just a few blocks form our hotel on Avenida Plaza de Mayo. When we got there, the line was long and not moving. It was already 1:30 and we didn’t really want to eat lunch to late as it would interfere with dinner.
We ended up doing something we have not done in years, we did the restaurant walk, with the help of google maps. We found a place we both agreed upon and had lunch. It was sort of like a Buenos Aires Dinner. The food was good, but not great. What was great was the tortilla (not what your thinking.) In Spain and here, a tortilla is basically a version of a quiche or omelet. This one was potato and onion surrounded in egg,
nice bite size squares. Was a nice little surprise, and because our reaction was so positive the server brought us extra.
We both had a different type of Milanesa. I had Neapolitan Chicken Milanesa; cheese, red sauce, and ham on top of the pounded out chicken quarter, leg bone still sticking out. Jerry had Fugazzeta Milanesa; pounded how beef covered with cheese, and three types of onions. They were both good, very much comfort food here. I had a glass of rose.,
After lunch we walked back to the hotel and spent the afternoon revamping the itinerary for the remaining days here. Jerry is now sorting the dry cleaning. We are drawing to the end of our first trip to South America but the remaining days are full.
Tonight is our complimentary dinner in the hotel, three courses and a bottle of wine.
Just back from dinner, and I am glad it was free. The staff and management at the hotel have been fantastic and gone the extra mile in assisting us, including upgrading us to a suite. The food service is extremely inconsistent. They taut their chef as some fancy chef, but he simply doesn’t
know how to cook, or never tastes his own food. Tonight was not different. They comped us a three course dinner with a bottle of wine, because a few nights back Jerry happened to not like his pizza. This dinner certainly did not make the pizza look any better. There was just next to know flavor on anything. When I have to add salt, you know there is a problem. I am really not even going to say what we had, it just wasn’t that good. I have added some pictures, but no dish of the day from here.
There is a dish of the day and it is the potato tortilla from lunch.
Tomorrow is mostly walking so my feet need to get their rest.
