Saturday 4 th May , KatherineBreeze Big4 Caravan Park, Cossack NTCost $50.40 per night with membershipRated by us 8/10
Mileage 19768 travelled 819kms includes trips around KununurraEarly start to the day coffee and sarnies packed for the long run to Katherine. We are only some 50kms from the NT border so we have run down our fruit and food supplies in case we get stopped at the border. Despite what I read on the net it would seem there is no border going into NT, there is a large quarantine point going into WA however, typical laid back top enders. Within a very short space of time almost immediately the car GPS advanced the clock in the car, the one and a half hours that NT is ahead of WA, with no mobile reception it took our phones a lot longer to catch up. I was surprised how many kilometres we drove with no mobile reception I reckon it was about 100Kms. The roads have deteriorated to be full of holes and washed away bits from the wet season which have not been fixed yet. A bit worrying as the speed limit is now 130 something I have not
seen for a while. We continue to toddle along at 85 and are not surprised that vans that pass us, do so multiple times as they stop for fuel and or toilet breaks. The sky is full of wispy clouds which are making some fun patterns in the sky. The landscape has become very flat and very green, with the typical dead straight Australian roads disappearing to the horizon. The Boab trees famous in Kununurra have now all but disappeared with only a few beautiful specimens left amongst the bushes. We were shocked to pass two girls on bicycles all loaded up with their gear obviously cycling around, my god what hard way to do the trip, but I guess they were young and healthy, good on them. There is lots of water around in the fields at the side of the road and evidence of roads been washed out at most of the creeks with gravel and debris on the road, we have to be careful with the drive along here. G drove the first 100Kms then I took over and drove us into Timber Creek about 110Kms further along the road. The town was packed with an annual fishing competition on
the river, which was still swollen and running fast, I reckon they will be fighting with crocs as well. The scenery along the swollen river was spectacular but no photos as I was driving and G was resting. When the road is washed out the roads department put out little red triangles with a flower on the middle to warn of road damage they look strange and not something you would heed as a warning until you get the idea.As we approached Katherine the scenery changed again to high rock cliffs and hills, this is how I remember Katherine Gorge as been when I canoed through it in 1991, long time ago!!!The camp site was a weird one to find, we had decided to opt for one slightly out of town in order to feel safer. It is a Big4 caravan park which I like and when we eventually found it, it was worth it, we have lots of shady trees and grass. When I commented to the reception that they had grass she said well at the moment, when they get busy and it gets dry it will all be gone in a few months, shame. Quiet and safe
feeling spot to unwind for day before we head to Darwin on Monday.
