Last night Chrissy and I flew from JFK to Edinburgh. I like the night time flights so you can sleep on the plane and be somewhat on the time of your arrival Country. Sadly we didn’t sleep very much…Chrissy much less than me.
When we arrived we went through border control faster than any country I’ve visited. Our plane arrived 20 minutes early. We did disembarked the plane, border control, picked up our luggage, and we’re ready for our hotel taxi by 10:30. Our planed arrival time was 10:005 so I didn’t engage the taxi until noon. We couldn’t reach the taxi nor Booking, so we had to wait
Our taxi driver was awesome. He was born in London and moved to Edinburgh when he was five. He shared a wealth of knowledge about the city and our taxi ride was excellent!!
Once we checked in to our hotel Chrissy took a nap (she didn’t sleep on the plane). I went out walking just to check out where we were and what was nearby!
When I booked our hotel, I asked for a room with a view of the castle. I really didn’t expect to see much
of the castle but I was truly surprised! We were just a block and a half from the castle.
I love organized travel. By that I mean going through a tour company, traveling around the country by bus, and meeting and enjoying 40 -50 people from all around the world. But when you do that you have less freedom to explore, you stay in the hotels they pick (which are usually not in the city center) and you eat at the restaurants they pick. If you are brave enough to plan your own travel you pick what you want and where you want. Of course if anyone gives me free time, I find a way to get where I want to go!!
Back at the hotel I took a short nap. Once we caught up on our missed sleep we went out exploring. Chrissy had a list of Scottish foods she wanted to try. They included haggis, neeps, tarries, Cullen skink, stories, Scottish smoked salmon, and Cranachan. I wanted to go to Greyfriars Bobby Pub (Marsha, Shealyn, and I visited there last July). Their menu has all of those items so that’s where we ate.
Greyfriars is
a story of a terrier whose owner died. The dog pinned for his owner and went to his grave everyday. The pub adopted The dog, fed it, brought it in out of the weather and has a statue to commemorate his life. There’s an old movie about this story.
The food was excellent! Chrissy is now trying to figure how to get haggis in her life! The cranachan (dessert) was outstanding!
Once we left the pub it started raining so we headed back to the hotel. Most stores closed at 6 or 7 and we wanted an early night. We will have a full day of exploring tomorrow!
