We walked into the centre of town for dinner last night and stumbled across some Sunday night entertainment. There were street vendors selling their wares as well as a stage set up that had violins, drums and a double bass. It was very traditional music and there were some in particular who were really getting into the dancing in a very animated way. It was a great way to end our last evening in Hungary before heading into Serbia today.
It's the last of the super hot days so we decided we needed to leave by 8:00am to be sure we gave ourselves a head start on the heat. We left at 8:20am. At least our trail today was mostly sealed which made for good time. We were back up on the levee which is basically a bike path but cars can drive on it. A sight you don't see everyday were the police with a car pulled over being booked for something. We just gave a smile and a nod as we went past and kept riding.
We stopped for our morning break having done 30kms already. All was going good. What we didn't know at the time
Sweets Anyone?
It's basically a donut dough shaped around a wooden block which is cooked over coals and then coated in your choice of cinnamon, icing sugar, cacao and the like. Quite tasty. was Jeff had been bitten by something that later caused the back of his left hand to swell.
Our route then took us into the town of Mohacs and on to the other side of the river. What we didn't realise when we planned the route was there was no bridge - it was a ferry. Now that isn't really an issue but we decided we'd change our route and ride on our side of the river instead. We punched in a course and set off. About 5kms later we realised we weren't following our new course and it would mean backtracking the whole way to correct it. Instead we settled on another route change that would get us were we needed to go and continued on. Navigationally, we were not having a good day.
Thankfully there were a few clouds about today and when the sun was behind them it was actually quite pleasant. We had lunch just 13kms short of our final destination for the day in a small town where we were able to get a cold drink and dump the rest of our HUF (Hungarian money) before crossing into Serbia.
It was actually
a double border crossing. Exiting Hungary and Entering Serbia. I'm not sure what would happen if you got stuck in the 100 meters between them. We showed our passports, answered the questions asked and more importantly didn't try and crack any jokes with the customs officers.
We passed through the border town town in Serbia before arriving at our destination, Bezdan. Both towns have seen much better days. The streets are mostly deserted and there are hardly any shops about. We're going to have to be very careful about picking our stops from here on in.
