It’s a long and winding road from Victor Harbor to Adelaide but when you get to the top of that last hill gee whiz it is a very beautiful view particularly on a warm clear sunny day. The downhill run is very long which means travelling it slowly and in second or third gear, the van is endeavouring to push you down and the last thing you want is the breaks overheating. Take it carefully. Again we stopped in a beachside caravan park these are particularly appealing because usually our work and travel involves being inland, sometimes very inland. It was a large and well kept park located about a 20 minute drive from Adelaide CBD. The city was abuzz as the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Writers festival were in full swing and Womad was ... read more

The Fleurieu Peninsula and in particular Victor Harbor was our next destination. Not far out of Mt Gambier is the airport and we were fortunate enough to have a plane though only a small one coming in to land as we were driving passed, the timing was perfect because just for a few seconds this little baby looked like it was going to land on the roadway right in front of us. Fortunately it didn’t though we would have gotten some magnificent shots. As is very typical of SA many old farmhouses with loads of character can be seen dotted around the place some have long been abandoned. I always find these buildings most interesting on our trip unfortunately more often than not we are unable to stop to take a nice photo so Liz snaps ... read more

The Limestone Coast was our next destination and in particular Mount Gambier home of the Blue Lake. I had read about and seen many pictures of the Lake but I was a still a little dubious that in real life it may not reach the expectations I had of it. Well you could knock me over with a feather this place was incredible and exceeded my expectations, I was a happy man. Unfortunately when we arrived at one of the Lake lookouts in the morning it was very windy, very wet and very cold really cold! It did not seem to deter the locals however there were plenty of them up and about enjoying a walk around the perimeter of the Lake. As the sky was quite grey and overcast I wondered if the Lake like ... read more

After we left the Sunshine Coast we drove to Loxton in SA to catch up with some friends. We had met Rod and Lorraine last year when we were working together at Litchfield Tourist Park NT. Initially our plan was to head straight to Melbourne and then call in on our way through but we had plenty of time up our sleeve so we took a detour. They are living on Lorraines sister and brother in laws farmlet while they are building a new home in town, there is loads of room and they invited us to park our van and stay with them. They are very long term residents of the Riverland and they took us out on a sightseeing trip, which included calling into some very nice wineries. The farmlet has about 5 acres ... read more

A friend I have known for over 30 years was getting married in Melbourne which was being held on February 16 but we arrived a few days early. Unfortunately I do not have photos of this joyous occasion - as explained I am still in catch up mode with the blogging and don't have access to those shots at the moment. We had driven to another friends place in South Australia after leaving the Sunny Coast and had left the van at their place. It is an easy trip from Loxton in SA to Melbourne and is much easier when you are not pulling the van behind you. We decided to treat ourselves with our first night in town and stayed at the Punt Hill Apartment Hotel in Essendon it was nice and had a view ... read more

While in Melbourne we headed down to a very beautiful part of Victoria to visit my cousin Liz who lives in the seaside township of Queenscliff. She had previously lived in the nearby town of Point Lonsdale and declares this area to be her favourite in Australia. Now I don’t entirely disagree with her but in the dead of winter with a howling cold southerly blowing straight off Bass Strait it would be too cold for my liking. However huge waves pounding into the shore does offer a dramatic treat for the senses. It is about personal preference but if you visit these parts regardless of the weather or time of the year it may be you are sure to be impressed. To get to Queenscliff you travel down the Princes Highway and pass the turn ... read more

The 3 plus weeks we spent on the Sunshine Coast were fantastic, relaxing but very tiring at the same time if you know what I mean. We were able to catch up with a number of friends but unfortunately did not get to see everyone we would have liked I guess we will just have to share a drink or two with those we missed on our next visit to the Coast. It is especially nice to catch up with family and in fact we arrived back on my sister Madeleines Birthday which was a nice bonus – for her, hey Mads? With what we are doing you never know exactly how long it will be before you get the chance to see them again so it is important to make the most of every opportunity. ... read more

We left Emerald on October 14th filled with great excitement as the Holiday Park at Cania Gorge QLD was to be home and work for the next few months. We had not been there before but did do some research on the Net and it looked like a fabulous place. I have previously mentioned my disgust at the condition of the roads in QLD and when we turned off the highway on to the Cania Dam road it was again very disappointing. This road is better than a camel track but when you consider it leads you to Cania Gorge and its associated scenic walks as well as Cania Dam it needs improving and do be careful of roaming stock. These are possibly the 2 biggest attractions within a couple of hundred kilometres and a lot ... read more

We awoke early and the morning was cool, it had been surprisingly cold in Queensland for this time of year or had I just forgotten? After having spent three months in the warmth of a Territory winter maybe it wasn't unusual, maybe I was just being a girly man! Naah!! Whatever the case it was goodbye to Longreach and hello….next stop. Not far down the road was a gem of a town called Ilfracombe, I had never heard of this place, I'm not Robinson Crusoe there I'll bet. It doesn't matter how many towns or places you visit there are still many many more that you have not been to. But if history is of any interest to you, you may well find this place as fascinating as we did. As you drive into town you ... read more

We had been in Katherine for a week during which time we had some repairs done as well as doing some of the Touro stuff. The portable fridge was giving us a little grief or was it the auxiliary battery? We had some mixed diagnosis but finally we were pointed in the right direction. This bloke was flat stick but said he would have a quick look in about 10 minutes, fair enough I thought. Not 5 minutes passed and out he came to the car park, ran a few tests, back inside to grab some stuff to do a few more checks, located the problem, back inside to get the parts necessary to carry out repairs, fitted said parts, used up 25 minutes of his time and the fridge was once again firing. You beauty ... read more
