Last full day in Sanur so we decided to spend the whole day here. Woke up late, had a leisurely breakfast, face timed Krissy and Oscar, then set off on our walk of Sanur at about 10.30am. We started walking up the main road of Sanur, Jl. Danau Tamblingan and first we dropped off a 4kg bag of washing at a laundry which only cost us $10 plys they deliveted it back to our hotel for free. Suited us perfectly because we didn't plan to get back to the area until late. We continued on, looked at a few shops and bought a few things before stopping for a very good cup of coffee at The Glass House at 1.30pm. So it had taken us 3 hours to do a 35 minute walk. Guess we did ... read more

Relatively early start for our day at The Bali Safari and Marine Park. Got a Grab car for $11.70 and arrived there at 9.15am. Took the Jungle Safari ride which took us through open areas with animals from Indonesia, India and Africa. The whole park is very well designed and you really felt like you were in the jungle at times during the 30 minute Safari drive. After that there were a series of shows. First show was an Animal Show which was really well done. It started with Indonesian birds flying across the stage and groups of Guinea pigs, rats, cats and dogs scurrying across the stage on cue. Then presentations of other animals. We then moved to another area where they presented a show featuring tigers. They were able to demonstrate how the tigers ... read more

Quiet day today. Decided to visit Kuta after Daisy had a swim after breakfast. Grab car only cost $7.80 but it took over an hour because of the heavy Bali traffic. We got dropped off at the Beachwalk Shopping Centre at 1.45pm, had some lunch at a Japanese place and Daisy spent most of the afternoon in just 3 clothing shops. My left leg has been sore from nerve pain so I just found places to sit while she shopped. We decided to have a coffee before heading to the beach for sunset and found a good cafe latte at a cafe called Arabica on the outside of the shopping centre and just across the road from the beach. We crossed over at 5.40pm and it was surprisingly, a nice family atmosphere. Sunset was beautiful of ... read more

Late start to the day. Decided to walk along Sanur beach, which was similar to yesterday's walk along Nusa Dua but not as 5 star. Quite a few cafes and restaurants just around the corner from us and we picked out one for lunch as we strolled along. Towards the end of our walk after passing some nice resorts, we saw some fancy privately owned properties, which were huge. We stopped at Bamboo Eatery and Bar and we both had a yummy crispy fried whole snapper. Food is so cheap here that you really never have to worry about prices. After lunch we thought we'd better get over to the GWK Cultural Park , our planned activity for the day. I'd read that you only needed 2 hours, so the plan was to head over to ... read more

Today was relaxing day after 2 days of early starts. Had our lovely buffet breakfast at 8.45am and decided to visit Nusa Dua and do the Bail Underwater Walk. There are 2 companies here like Uber. Gojek is well established like Uber and Grab is a newer alternative. I did a couple of comparisons and Grab seems cheaper so ordered a Grab car to pick us up at our hotel. Another popular alternative is to hire a driver all day. Cost for that is about $55 for 10 hours, but we decided we didn't need that today. Cost to get to the activities centre was only $11.90. I was expecting an office for the Underwater Walk but instead we were directed to follow this guy who sat us down and asked us which of the activities ... read more

Today’s activity was a visit to see the sunrise on Mt Batur. Woke up very early this morning for our 3.00am pick-up (although they were 15 minutes late). I figured that this was the best day to do this because our bodies hopefully were still on Sydney time which meant 5.00am. Seemed to work although we didn’t get to bed as early as I had planned so we only got about 5 hours sleep. It was a 1.75 hour drive to the jeep pick-up, so we both managed a bit more shut eye before then. It was a 25 minute drive in the jeep, 5 minutes on a sealed road, then 20 on a steep, bumpy dirt road. It was actually a lot of fun. We reached the viewing area at 5.25am, along with about 200 ... read more

Early start to the day to catch our 8:30am flight on Batik Air. Daisy is always anxious to get to the airport early. On this occasion, there were no worries. Took 10 minutes for our Didi driver to arrive, got to the airport by 6am as there was little traffic. Then only took about 15 minutes to check-in (no line), clear customs and security check. We had some breakfast and coffee as Batik is one of those budget airlines where nothing is included. We decided to just get some snacks for lunch which we bought before boarding. Flight was less than 7 hours and we both managed to get a bit more sleep in between watching videos and listening to blogs. Although the plane left about 30 minutes after scheduled take-off, we arrived on time at ... read more

"Which countries have Visa on Arrival for Indian citizens?.." -- this question was the starting point of our trip to Bali. Rolling back a few months - we had made our grand plan with a few childhood friends in family to have an international vacation this year. Started with Turkey as the destination of choice, and then Portugal - then Egypt and Jordan. For reasons best left for another blog (and a long frustrating one!!), here we were in early May of 2023, without a destination we could all visit at the same time. Ergo, the question of "Visa on Arrival" - as we simply did not have enough time to plan AND wait for a visa. To top that, most of the SE Asian region was already approaching rainy season. Finally, it was a toss ... read more

Where the land is stepped, there the sky is upheld… ~ Indonesian Proverb HE SAID... I had two very small points of reference for our Indonesian adventure – surfing and vegetarian food. And to be honest, even these were relatively unknown to me. My knowledge of Indonesian surf was derived entirely from surfing magazines, and my knowledge of Indonesian food was derived entirely from a small eatery in my home town of Hobart. I knew little about the country, because I had never travelled there. This was my first trip, which somewhat defies the stereotype of the quintessential Australian tourist. Most Aussies travel to Indonesia at some point in their early adulthood. For some, it's considered a rite of passage. The proximity of exotic islands such as Bali to our northwest corner makes this coming-of-age ritual ... read more

Like an owl yearning for the moon… ~ Indonesian Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling back to Australia from Bali – via Melbourne and Hobart. The check-out time of our villa at The Pavilions in Sanur was 12pm, and our flight was at 11:10pm. We didn’t relish the thought of 11 hours in Bali’s heat and humidity without access to a shower or air-conditioning, so we negotiated an extended check-out with the friendly reception staff, which allowed us to keep our villa until 8pm (for half the normal price). It was a lifesaver. We organised our packs, settled in the villa’s comfortable open plan lounge and relaxed into the late afternoon and early evening. I freshened up in the outside shower for one final time at 7pm, dressed for the five-hour flight to Melbourne, then ... read more
