Sad to say it's our last day in Kasane, travelling to Namibia tomorrow morning for the next leg of the adventure, but what a last day it was.
We headed into the reserve at around 8 hving heard so much about it but not knowlking what to really expect. Got to the gate and sorted the day permits out and got ready to go in and noticed all these people letting their tyres down. Normal behaviour when driving in sand but why would they do it here I thought, we'd find out later. The first 10km was pretty uneventful with a few sightings of Impala, some beautiful brds and a few Baboons. Once we got to the river trail though it all changed. Rafts of Bufallo all over the river banks, Impala and Water Buck everywhere. The river trail runs for about 5km and then heads into the bush a way. At this stage the reason for the tyre letting down became very aparent, the guy in front of me ploughed straight into some very soft sand and was fucked, proper fucked. A friendly ranger stopped and I dug through the vast array of equipment in my boot
and found my rope. The ranger had no idea what he was doing so I got the rope, tied it to the guys bakkie and the rangers truck and the ranger pulled him out. You'd thinbk at this stage they'd be extremely grateful, sadly not which shocked me because if it was me I'd be thanking him the the next 5 years The guy then proceeded to let his tyres down and we figured we probably should have done the same. We decided at this stage that it's better to withdraw gracefully so we turned for the exit. Turning back was the best decision we could possibly have made. We spent the next hour witnessing the best Elephant sightings we've ever had. Some of the photos are incredible including a sequence where 2 Elephants initially looked like they were sparring but it became very obvious this was anything but a fight. We pushed on for a while and the elation turned to great sadness when we witnessed a recently passed Elephant slumped on the side of the ride. This was very nmoving for us both and we decided we would not take a photo of this sad sight. We finally
got back to the gate around 12.
Headed back into Kasane to get ready for the afternoon boat trip and stopped at a great hotel with fabulous coffee which is like an oasis up here. The views were incredible but sadly the 2 English couples children weren't, noisy and disobedient. The coffee was great though and they left so we took their seats on the deck over the river and had anpother coffee.
2:30 at the hotel and we were picked up for the boat cruise. By this time it was 35C and we were both exhausted and could probably have said scrap it and have a nap, so glad we didn't. The cruise was great from start to finish and the sightings were to die for including the highlight for us, a large male Elephant swimming back from the island to the mainland.
A tremendous day to round off this leg of the trip. Back on the road tomorrow but only a short 7 hour drive to Rundu in Namibia.
