The second time ever flying and I miss my damn flight. Oh and Happy Memorial Day to the people back home. This is really testing my stress capacity to the maximum. First the bus didn't stop so I walked to the metro, couldn't get a ticket, so illegally hopped on. Good thing I didn't get caught, I don't need a fine. Then I was one euro short for the damn OrlyBus but a really nice guy gave me a euro. I feel eternally grateful to him. He saved my life. So I get here.. and am running to the check in point (couldn't do online check in because I didn't have a printer) and trip and roll my ankle, so that's rather painful at this point in time. But, alas, I was 5 minutes late for ... read more

These last couple of days have seemed so surreal. Yesterday, the new couchsurfer came to Alix's and she's from New Hampshire. She had met a guy from LA in the hostel so we arranged to meet up and surprised him with a picnic in La Place de Concorde and sat in the lounge chairs in the sun. We then got a bottle of wine (me a smoothie since I don't like wine) and went to Luxemburg Gardens just south of the city centre. Just what we talked about in the gardens has made me realized how much I've grown over these last couple of weeks, obviously as a new traveler and as a person in general. An experience today really tested my limits of patience, but I'll get to that later. In the park we just ... read more

I should have really learned how to say "where is the closest bathroom in French before I went out today. So, I just overdrew from my bloody bank account. Just like I do every week back home. I forgot about this whole euro conversion when buying my plane ticket from France to Rome. And the whole "not getting loans thing" is stressing me out to the MAX. On a lighter note, went to central Paris at night last night. Most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Going back to the Eiffel Tower at night tomorrow (?). It sparkles for 5 minutes on the hour during the night and I saw it at midnight from a distance last night and I think we're going to get some baguettes and cheese (France has good cheese), and go sit and ... read more

I arrived in Paris this morning. Thank the good Lord there was a native French dude on the bus next to me. He helped me get to where I needed to be. I was extremely overwhelmed. I didn't sleep well on the bus and I was really groggy. We went into a near hotel and got coffee and croissants. It woke me up and I was able to take the Metro to Anvers to meet my new host. In the meantime I was taught the rules of French and how to pronounce some of the words. I've been running around saying everything out loud. I feel like a 5 year old that just learned how to read. So I met up with Alix, she's such a nice girl and we headed out and she showed me ... read more

So, here I am sitting in the Chunnel. Yep, I'm under the English Channel as I type this. Of course I don't have internet access now but I'll just copy this blog once I have access. We drove the coach bus into this train car and the train is bussing us through the chunnel. We were allowed to get out and I was the first one out wandering around. I can't believe I'm underground below the water. Best moment of leaving London-there was a sign.. a big, blue sign, that said FRANCE ---. It made me laugh because normally the sign would say a city and then the distance to it, but no, this sign just said France and had an arrow pointing to the right. Apparently the country of France is to my right. ... read more

Europe May 21st 2010

Today has been a lazy day. I also just lost my entire blog due to a break in the internet connection so I'm now retyping a shorter, condensed version of the previous. I left Fran's yesterday to go to a new host up in Enfield. It was a sad departure. She was such a wonderful host with an amazing daughter. Good times were had between the other couchsurfers and her family. I can't thank them enough for their hospitality. Especially hot chocolate in bed = I'm now in the Enfield area. I ate at a wonderful African restaurant last night and stuffed myself with delicious food. It's like a sub-cultured experience. A different culture inside an already new one. I was able to contact my family last night. My aunt passed away a few days ago ... read more

I woke up late.. once again. 1pm. I really need to get over this jet lag business. It’s starting to drive me bloody mad. I went on the Harry Potter tour and got to see some of the filming locations. It was rather neat. I then proceeded to go into a red telephone booth to call Blaine but the payphone wouldn’t take my money. I heard it going down the “return” chute but there was nothing in the bin. So, I did some investigating just to find the some bloke shoved a pen up inside there to wedge it shut. I unwedged it and became 9.22 pounds richer. So, no I did not find five dollars, I approximately found nine pounds, which is way better given the conversion rate. I’m not even sure what it is.. ... read more

Short printed skirts with black tights and crazy driving. I spent my first day out and about yesterday. I’m so glad I have this oyster card so I can just get on random buses and trains. I got on the train to Waterloo and then got off and voila, there was the London Eye and everything downtown. I took photos for about half an hour (typical tourist, I know) and made my way over by Parliament and Westminster Abbey, which is absolutely gorgeous. I wish I could have gone inside but there was a worship service going on at the time. I feel pretty comfortable in the area I’m staying but once I got to the city centre I was more aware of my surroundings. I saw a boy get pickpocketed in front of my and ... read more

So, I got on my first commercial jet plane May 12th, got to London yesterday. It’s 6 hours ahead of normal time back home and I’m suffering severe jet lag. I didn’t wake up until 1pm today (7am) and I went to bed at 10 the night before. I’m still exhausted. I’m homesick. I miss everything that I know as mine and how I do things. Luckily my first stop is England so they still speak English, a less harsh transition, but it’s still difficult for me. I don’t have time to write a lot because I’m going to go to the Museum of Science and Natural History today. Hopefully I’ll feel a little more at home. Add me on skype if you haven’t yet: dsaxline I’m going to try and blog everyday to log my ... read more
