Asia » China » Beijing » Temple of Heaven July 30th 2010

Once again we left early and went to our one attraction of the day. We have a lot of extra days in Beijing so we can take our time. Which is nice since the traffic here is pretty bad, it lets us take things slow and relax. Today we saw the Temple of Heaven, where the emperors since the Ming dynasty have been worshipping Heaven, as early as the 1300's. It was kind of overcast but still pretty cool and exciting. We walked around the whole park which had some awesome trails through rows of trees. When worshipping Heaven there were many different phases throughout the ritual with ceremonial sacrifices. There was also a phase of dancing and singing. Walking along the path you could see many people singing or dancing to music or doing Tai ... read more

This morning Jie and I got an early start and went to Tian'anmen Square but didn't look at the zombie of Mao Zedong yet. We're doing that later this week. (Every Communist country preserves the body of their first leader in the capital and put it on display - Lenin, Mao, Kim Jung Song). Today we went straight for the Forbidden City. It was still a little foggy but we had a great time. First you have to go through Tian'anmen Square, then take an underground tunnel under the main road, to the other side right outside the Forbidden City. Even from far away at the back of Tian'anmen Square you can see the huge portrait of Mao Zedong on the wall above the gate to the Forbidden City. After you get to the other ... read more

Today we had an early flight to Beijing through Eastern China Airways. As soon as we got out of the plain I felt the humid weather and it was very foggy due to the humidity. Beijing has 5 rings of interstates around it so we went from the fifth to the second, where our hotel is. We relaxed for a little while in the hotel and then Jie and I set off for the Beijing Zoo to see Pandas! We took a taxi into downtown and found the Zoo, paid for tickets, and ran inside to find pandas. They had a huge part of the zoo dedicated to pandas and the different kinds. Haha, they had olympic games pandas, asian games pandas, and baby pandas. Overall we saw 7 of them. The first two were behind ... read more

Wow, I'm so full. We just had dinner with Jie's uncle, aunt, cousin, and grandmother, and they made me eat sooo much. We had pig feet, noodles, BBQ snake, fried ants, pidgeon, and crawfish. We had a lot for lunch too because we ate at the buffet at the hotel again. We got a late start this morning but still managed to make it out to a big bridge in Nanjing that crosses the Yangtze River. The third longest river in the world and the longest in Asia. We drove across it in a taxi. It was really wide too because it's the rainy season in China and the river expanded because there's too much water. Then we had the taxi take us to the Nanjing History Museum. I really liked it, it had exhibits for ... read more

Today was a really awesome day. First Jie's mom drove us to Purple Mountain, a big mountain in Nanjing, where we saw a bunch of different attractions. We met Jie's cousin there and he went with us too. First we saw Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum. We saw his tomb and where he's buried. He overthrew the Qing Dynasty and pretty much founded the Republic of China. His tomb was a huge park enclosure and then 300 steps up to his tomb. We climbed a lot of stairs throughout the day. Then we took a car tour of the mountain where we saw a lot of monuments for veterans, and also climbed a 9 story tower. It had a spiral staircase and at the top had a great view of the mountain and the city of Nanjing. We ... read more

Just had a rest day today from so much sightseeing. Jie's hometown is great and I'm just down the street from them in a hotel. I got to see around his house. It's very different from a western style home. They have two sun rooms with window over the roof so they get really warm. They use one of the sunrooms to dry clothes by hanging them. They also have a garden and grow peaches, grapes, cucumbers, and other vegetables and fruits. Tomorrow we're going to the Purple Mountain and seeing some things around there. It's a big mountain on the East side of Nanjing. We took a couple walks around the neighborhood which has a lake in the middle. And we took Dan Dan, Jie's dalmation for a walk too. Mostly just sat around today ... read more

I'm writing this July 25th, Chinese time, because I was too tired last night to write it, but its from yesterday: We had an awesome touring day yesterday. I woke up early and couldn't get back to sleep so I went down to find the hotel's gym. No one really spoke English but I could say enough for them to figure out what I wanted. I'm understanding more and more and more Chinese. We eat in the hotel restaurants a lot, because they're usually big, nice, and have enough room for all the guests. I met Jie's dad and he's really nice. So anyways, we always eat with about 5-8 people. Last night we ate in a hotel restaurant with friends of Jie's dad and I could understand a lot of the conversation, and sometimes when ... read more

Today was the first day we did some sightseeing in China. We woke up in Kun Shan and drove to Zhouzhuang. Zhouzhuang is well known for its rivers and river boats, which I really wanted to see. I got lots of pictures and we got to see a ton of the old parts of town. We took a boat ride too which was really fun. I think I stand out as American because everyone stares at me and some people stop and want to get their pictures taken with me. But I'm also the only person in China who lifts weights, so that could be it too. After we toured Zhouzhuang all morning we drove to Suzhou. The hotel in Suzhou is awesome! My room has a kitchen, bed room, and living room. And they have ... read more

We spent the night in Jie's father's home town of Kun Shan. I had my first Chinese meal last night and it was delicious. I'm really tired. I couldn't sleep on the plane and only slept a little last night. But at least I'm closer to being on Chinese time now. Kun Shan is right outside Shanghai. Today we will go around the city a bit and then head for Nanjing. There's also a city we are stopping at on the way with the small rivers running through it and the fishing boats that I wanted to see. We are about to have a special noodle breakfast now :)... read more

July 21, 2010 So we have about 7 more hours left on the plane trip. It hasn’t been bad at all. In the line for check in I met a guy who goes to NC State and he was dropping off his cousin and aunt at the airport, and they happened to be on my flight. So I’ve been helping them get to the gates and things since they don’t speak much English. Then on the flight to Detroit I met another nice Chinese guy from Hangzhou, one of the cities I’m going to in China, and it turns out we sit really close together on the flight to Shanghai too. And I was really lucky because there are three columns of seats on this flight with 3 seats in each row. I’m on the side ... read more
