Well here I continue skirting the Uruguayan Coast and sleeping in a new bed every night. I loved Colonia and stayed there longer than I thought I would and then a few days ago I took a very comfortable bus a couple of hours down the road to the capital city of Montevideo. It was nice there and I was traveling with a really wonderful girl Eva from Frankfurt and we spoke Spanish the time and e

My bus from Montevideo dropped me at Maldonado which is about another 10 minutes away from Punta del Este Uruguay's most famous beach resort and also one of the best in South America apparently. In summer and over Easter weekend the place is thronging but by the time I arrived on Easter Monday it was quiet as a mouse. Indeed for the last 2 nights I've been the only person staying in my h

I hadnt planned to go to Punta del Este Uruguays version of Miami Beach but as life unwinds and email conversations lead me down unexpected paths I found myself on a bus heading towards Servas hosts who did not speak English but were happy to have me visit their home. I was apprehensive but when I met Daniela and Gabriel I could not have been made to feel more welcomed. Using a potpurri of

Day 1 Tuesday Brian and I were traveling to Uruguay the exact same days as Vanessa by weird coincidence so we decided to make much of the trip together. The only portion of the trip that we were apart was the initial bus ride. When we got to Uruguayan customs Vanessa was waiting for us. She had arrived 15 minutes before. We all caught the same bus to Montevideo which picked us up directly

We met a couple of Chilean guys Yerko and Marta who were really cool and basically weith a few others kinda formed a small group and bas

Back in Buenos Aires we ended up staying at Ayres Portenos again. The flight had been delayed by a few hours so the familiarity was good late at night. We even got into the Argentine way of doing things and went for a big steak at 12.30am. Irsquom still not convinced that going to bed on a full stomach is the best way of achieving a svelte look but when in Rome.We took the opportunity to se

Punta del Este and Montevideo

As you move south from Brazil into Uruguay the land changes from verdant hilly country to gently rolling land of dry brown grass that's been grazed short. A few islands of dark green trees occasional groups of cattle nosing the ground this is the pampas. Apparently they're having a very dry year with dead livestock now there's an oxymoron lying here and there in the fields. Punta del Este

Another one of those song quotes that you'll have to figure out for yourself...Punta del Este is the vacation spot for South Americas rich and famous. There are tons of beaches but even more clubs and bars. The sand and the waves are nice but the beautiful people sitting on those beaches are what makes them amazing that and the dental floss the girls call bathing suits. We set up camp on Biki

The capital Montevideo is absolutely lovely and as for the beaches in the east they are just as good as home. The surf is pumping and the sand goes on forever. The people are so friendly and it is very safe. It really reminds me of

We had to go back on ourselves a bit here but it was the only way we could incorporate our cheap flight to Montevideo and still get to BA. So we found ourselves back at Colonia then onto the next COT bus to Montevideo with a quick pit stop for lunch and then the next bus to Punta Del Este.Bus travel has become part of our psyche it involves however a bit of thought and mostly the stubbornness

Second day in Uruguay today we visited famous Punta del Este at the ocean shore. A 230 hour bus ride took us to Uruguays most famous beach resort. Fortunately the weather was close to perfect as there were no clouds at all we were able to spend a beautiul sunny day at the sea. Unlike during the south american winter Punta was not very busy.
