Much Relief in Rethymno

6 hours on the ferry. The ferry was almost identical to the last but this one had rows and rows of bench seats on the deck which made for a more comfortable sleep. We arrived in Heraklion Crete expecting to find a guy with a sign and a van ready to drive us to his hotel. We walked off the ferry in the crowd and saw nothing. Nothing but friends and family waiting for others. No guy no sign nowh

Greece

We arrived in Athens at about 430 in the morning as our flight from Barcelona was delayed about 3 hours. This was not a good start but we were all optimistic about our streak of bad luck ending and were determined to make Greece a postive experience. We had to wait about 1 hour to get on the metro as it was not running yet and we were able to find our hostel very easily which was a first for u

Village Crete Katalagari

Well I'm not exactly in Rethymno but will be soon. Currently I am in a charming little village called Katalagari. We are getting the village experience while living in a place that is so beautiful I would come back in a second. It is called Katalagari country suites and we are staying in a mini apartment with everything from a separate bed room to a flat screen TV with DVD player to a kitchen

I'm just calling this one Crete. I don't want to give anything away

We arrived in Crete at 7pm and were met by the agent from the car company we had booked with. That's correct we rented a car. A Fiat Panda. Wowsers. I paid for the car and soon we were off and getting lost almost immediately. Well not completely lost we just took a few wrong turns but soon enough we were on the open highway heading the 150km or so to Mirthios our base camp to be for the next

"here are your tickets." "where are we going again"

To put it bluntly this portion of my travels was an epic adventure. I write the account of April 912 a full 3 months later because I was so exhausted afterwards I could not force myself to type it out. the days are a bit hazy and run together so if 2 2 6 i apologizeWhen we decided to leave Athens Egypt was too expensive so Crete seemed like the logical choice.
How to restrain a turtle...

...massage itWell that's the idea apparently. When I tried it I ended up running circles in the sand clutching onto 70kg of Loggerhead turtle that was keen to get back to the sea I've done 2 night surveys now and they are amazing even if they do completely shatter you for the next few days. Seeing a turtle laying her eggs is one of the most magical sights I have ever witnessed. I never rea

Crete

I have booked an overnight ferry from island of Rodos to the island of Crete. It was supposed to take 12 hours. Due to choppy seas it took us 16 hours to reach our destination. After 16 hours on choppy sea I felt like a drunk sailor. Even on land I still thought things were rocking for good 6 hours after the ride. not the best experience but here I am ...The biggest island in Greece. Crete I

Just East of Africa

Crete was stinking hot. I supposed I should have guessed that it being June and Crete being practically Africa. I really haven't chosen the right times of year to visit places Scotland in March and Greece in June. If I'd been thinking I would have reversed them... but there are 24 hours in a day and one can't be smart in all of themWhen I arrived in Heraklion the biggest city on Crete I did
