With a brand new van as replacement for the last leaky one and up graded to a bigger version that thankfully did not smell of Stuarts wetsuits we started on our travels. Our plan was to travel up the Coromandel peninsula an area that we had heard had unrivalled beauty and to perhaps catch some fo the beautiful beaches that settled into the northern par

We had a long drive from Paihia to Pauanui but broke it up woth two interesting stops. The first was to see a kiwi at a small conservation place the second a world famous bird hide where hundreds of wading birds were sitting on two small strips of beach area. This area is very different and at first a bit spooky Lovely scenery with a mountain range tropical forests and gorgeous coastline.

Hi everybodyChange of plans today. We had already planned to the Coromandel pennsiula today for a two night stay. However when we arrived in Coromandel Town we discovered that the actual Holiday Park was some 4 miles outside of town and miles from anywhere. No Restaurants of any description and more importantly no watering holes. So it was a drive back into the town find a shop and settle for a '

November 18th

We did some walks before we left Hahei. There is a really nice water worn rock they call Cathedrel cove about 30 min for our backpackers that we wanted to see before we left. After that it was down to Waihi. Well we took a long deture because Niv the guy I am traveling with wanted to see some gold mines or something. Anyways it wasn't on that road so we went all the way back to Thames and then b

We left Hamilton early to drive the Cormandel. It was some pretty crazy thin roads with logging trucks ripping down them. Right along the side of the ocean. One small wrong turn and over you would go. We drove all the way thru and stayed in Hahei the night. It is just down from Hotwater beach. Good thing we went there because I was still burnt from being in Raglan and the water was so hot I didn't

Coromandel Peninsula and the end of NZ

We stayed at Hahei the first night and got there just in the nick of time to visit Hot Water Beach. Two hours either side of low tide you can dig a hole in the sand down by the sea edge and due to the fact that the sand there is on top of more 'thermal activity' parts of the beach are above areas where the sea water collects in underground reseviors this water is then superheated by the earth a

So my next port of call after Mt Maunganui was the Coromandel peninsula see map if you're wondering where it is which immediately became my favourite part of NZ so far. I spent a night in the town of Thames waiting for the next connection with my backpacker bus hung out in a tiny local bar watching a live band which was excellent and entirely unexpected as the town during the day had been

We trekked over to the area by the rocks where the hot spings were located and almost immediately realised our feet were burning There were a few other groups of early birds but we basically had the pick of the beach and decided to locate ou

On the way we stopped off at Te Puke to take a look at the farm cum theme park dedicated to the Kiwi Fruit.
