Erfurt The Basics

Erfurt the capitol of Thuringia lies in the dead center of Germany. Not sure why but this program doesn't include it as a location. This seems odd considering it is a state capitol of 200000 people and a center of regional trade.Dirk is our host in Erfurt. He works in the city's Human Resources Department and is also a volunteer firefighter. He has given us a jampacked schedule of activit

17th 18th SeptemberWe left Lake Constance and headed for a town called Schiltach which is in the Black Forest. We have loved it here. The lonely planet guide didnrsquot give it much of a write up but it did say it was the prettiest town in the Black Forest and they werenrsquot wrong. There are two rivers running through here which meet. The houses are built on the side of the hills and a

Weimar and Erfurt

After heading off early in the morning we cruised up from Cologne to Weimar along the beloved German autobahn. Around 400kms covered in around 2.5 hours. For those who haven't been on one it's a pretty awesome experience. Also probably one of the only places that you can be going at 180kmh and be overtaken. We arrived mid morning and I went for a walk through the industrial area of Erfurt whils

Well as many of you know Weimar is where I spent my two glorious study abroad summers in Germany. SMU had a program there for Music History and German which fit my studies perfectly so I went twice One of my great friends on the program Justus was placed in Erfurt so I decided it would be wonderful to meet up with him at the Zwiebel Fest in Weimar and then he was nice enough to let me c

Porcellain Leuchtenburg Castle and Bauhaus tour

Hey guys I'm getting a little behind with the whole travel blog thing but here's some recent news. We toured Khala Porcellain the other day and it was pretty impressive for all of the engineers in the group. It's the largest porcellain producer in Germany and has been around for a while. It was reprivatized when the wall fell and most of the production processes were automated. Since I'm

6am came too quickly as I got about 3 hours sleep. While we were stopped waiting for the elevator to go down to breakfast some short dark haired girl yelled out to her friend We'll have to find another guy to buy us dinner tonight. She then looked at my friend and me and stated Some guy bought us dinner last night. I honestly didn't hear her so I looked at her dumbfounded while Suzi said

Finally in Germany

Hey guys So I'm finally in Germany. I've actually been here for a while but the internet situation in Weimar is a little complicated. For the first two days of my trip I stayed with two friendsMark and Mattat Mark's grandparents' house in Pirmasens kind of close to Frankfurt but right on the French border. They didn't speak any English so I got a good German warmup. After that I took
