Leshan Giant Buddha

Unwittingly I have found myself making a penchant of visiting the biggest buddhas of the world in some regard over the last few years. The Leshan Giant Buddha is reputed to be the biggest Buddha carved into a cliff and maybe the biggest fullstop I dont know it was impressive anyway. Basically not much to report from the outing as it was a bit of a pash and dash affair.

When I read It was written on our bus tickets that we were taking the luxury coach to Leshan I was skeptical. But it turned out to be true. I had never sat on a more comfortable bus. It was spotlessly clean and had plush seats an overhead flat TV screen and an attendant who gave us a brief introduction of Leshan and the Grand Buddha in both Mandarin and English although we had absolutely no i

This we had to see as it was in our area of travel The World's Largest Buddha standing overlooking the River. Carved into the rocky river bank cliff. We joined the crowds and I mean crowds to climb the steep steps down to the Buddha's feet. A dramatic sight an overwhelming 71m high ears 7m long feet 8.5m wide 1 toe being 8.5m long It was simply huge It was in 713AD when a Buddhist monk

Today we visited Leshan on a confluence of three rivers some 1200 years ago a inspired Monk decided to carve the Grand Budda into the rock face. This was to inspire local traffic on the Mingjiang river to avoid accidents which were very common at this era in time. We took a speed boat out infront of the Budda before landing and taking the climb to the Budda itself. This was magnificent stair cas

We woke up really early again and had a quick breakfast. Afterwards we finally left that godawful excuse for a hotel at around 8 A.M.. While traveling it was raining really hard. Only an hour into our travel we were stopped on one of the mountains as their was a landslide blocking the road. The rocks were too large to pass and we were forced to wait as government officials removed the rubbl

It was off to see the big Budda at Leshan. I was still feeling a little rough and am developing a nice black eye. Looking forward to seeing the Big Buddha which is a massive Buddha carved into the side of a mountain at the conversion point of 3 rivers. It's several hundred years old and mean't to be spectacular. However it is now May week which is a 1 week period where the whole of China gets

I had some banana pancakes I love the stuff and went to the internet cafe. I had a lot of catching up to do on my blog and the previous day hadn't been enough. Writting these blogs takes time and updating pics can be even worse sometimes. I pretty much spent the whole

Giant Buddha of Leshan

The reason I went to Leshan is a giant Buddha carved out of the rock next to the river by some hardworking monks. Leshan is very nice itself because it is situated on the peninsula of a river mouth. Instead of joining all the tourists on the standard boat cruise to the huge feet I took a ferry to an island opposite the Buddha. Here many locals spent there evening while having a picnic and enjoy

Today is our second day in Leshan and we are sitting in a nice internet cafe where no one can speak English and it is all teenage boys playing videogames and talking smack. At least we can still use the internet Microsoft rules the world. Before that we spent 3 days hiking on Emeishan an 1800 yearold Buddhist pilgrimage. At the highest point it was over 3000 meters.
