Cachi Cafayate and a car rental.

Tuesday August 6th 2008 Salta to La PomaUsually I'm inclined to invest more quality time in one area rather than see a quantity of sights as fast as possible. However because Dain and I wanted to see so much of this part of the country it was our last 2 weeks in Argentina we reluctantly abandoned our multiday backcountry plans to rent a car and get to as many hot spots as possible. We agr

the most beautiful ride ever.

Cachi beautiful. In a nutshell. The ride was absolutely amazing and I became in awe of how the vegetation could get from rainforest and ropical to desert. Although the experience was less than spectacular... there were no eyeopening conversations or climbing things that made me feel exhilarated... I came to appreciate geology and wished there was a book on geology that I could get through to exp

Cachi

Today I got up before the sun to be driven on a circuit through the Andean Northwest. The destination was billed as the colonial town of Cachi but really the drive was the majority of the excursion. We drove through El Parque Nacional de los Cordones on a road that took us well above tree line. We stopped in the forementioned Cachi for two hours of wandering and lunch and then headed back to

A hidden gem in Cachi

After hours of driving on a dirty road from Cafayate to Cachi I saw a sign Casa de Campo La Paya saying in French that it was the place where Europeans want to stay. An impulse of curiosity pushed me to explore that place even though I didn't necessarily want to end up in a French hangout. I thought that place would be a few kilometres from the turn but the dirt road was being endless. It was

Cachi and the Valles Calchaquies

Shocked and stunnedHaving had such a great day trip to Cafayate to the south of Salta we did not believe that our trip to Cachi could be anything other than a disappointment by comparison. How wrong we were. Today threw up simply awesome scenery which was ever changing throughout our journey to the town of Cachi. For anyone in this area a trip to Cachi should be a priority.Words wonrsquot do

HeyTook an overnight bus executive class which means the seats fully fold back to proper flat beds The way to go to Salta on St Stephens night. Pretty city. Went paraglidging over amazing mountain ranges with Justin and Anke. It was my first time and I loved it. We were over 4000 m above sea level. A little scary but got great rush from it. Cant wait to do it again. The photos will explain

We left Tafi del Valle via a quick visit to the Parque de Menhires and nothing more. Headed up into the clouds over the 3000m Infiernillo pass. Couldnt see any of the views. As we dropped down on the Cafayate side of the hills the clouds lifted and the landscape became more desert like with the lush forests being quickly replaced by cardones cacti. We were hoping to stay at Quilmes to see the

We arrived in Salta after a 16 hour bus journey from Mendoza so we were pretty knackered. Our first day was spent exploring the city which seemed to have a very South American feel to it compared to the more European feel that the rest of Argentina emulated. There was a lot of hustle and bustle in the main shopping street and the square was lined with an ornate cathedral beautiful buildings and o
