Peurto Madryn and Valdes Peninsula

We saw whales and dolphins swimming together yesterday. It was really magic. The whales were huge and there were several of them playing and splashing around. No killer whales unfortunately as theyre not here at this time of year but we saw flamingoes and elephant seals too. The nature here is out of this world. Just strolling down the beach you can see whales in the water. Not like Blackpool be

Peninsula Valdes

So off we set on our day trip with a quick skittle around town to pick up others from the various hostels. At the final pick up our tour guide came back from buzzing the bell at the hostel looking very frustrated. Apparently the last couple were still in bed. After waiting a good 10 minutes and seeing a few frustrated passengers suddenly the doors swung open and we both looked at each other and b

It feels like i am covering a lot of ground in Argentina in a very short period of time. But thats because i am quickly realising its a massive country to try and get around. The distances to cover are fairly immense. In the last week since leaving Iguazu i have taken 1 flight and 3 overnight bus trips to stay in 2 different towns. Its a bit crazy and i am forgetting what day is what already as th

Having an absolute whale of a time

Well I am now into the last 10 days of my yearlong adventure it's crazy how time flies So... since the very beginning of my trip I had been looking forward to seeing the whales and their calves in Argentina during their breeding season. And finally the time came when i arrived in Puerto Madryn hoping these gigantic mammals had not yet migrated to Antartica. Oh my god the whales are a jumping

Puerto Madryn

Arrived in Puerto Madryn on the 0312. Our hostel was fine with a double room consisting of 2 bunk beds and a double bed we didnt need the extra space but didnrsquot complain. Puerto Madryn can be sold as a beach resort with a long stretch of nice beach and a seaside town feel full of souvenir and outdoor gear shops very expensive for tourists but we were there for the wildlife mainly

Whales and Wales in Argentina

Over the course of three days and 25 hours on buses we made our way from El Calafate to Puerto Madryn on Argentina's east coast. On the first night after leaving El Calafate we stayed in a place called Perito Moreno nothing to do with the glacier and famous in our eyes for topping the Most Boring Town We've Been To In South America list or anywhere come to think of it. Not only is there

Wonderful Wildlife

From El Calafate we travelled overnight by bus to Puerto Madryn on the Atlantic coast of Argentina still in Patagonia and still pervaded by the perpetual wind. As a city Puerto Madryn is not particularly attractive or special though the beach is nice. However people come here to explore the Peninsular Valdes where one can see a wide variety of wildlife in one day. We took a fullday tour wh

As we were so close to Ushuaia only 12 hours away the worlds most southern city we thought it would be rude not to take a look. Although you wouldnt describe the city as pretty its the location and the surroundings that make it a special place. It is an extremely remote and rugged part of the country despite the number people that come here surrounded by mountains on one side and th

Hooked up with the same tour group and all the same travelers from yesterday for the 3 hour drive to Punta Tombo to see the Magellenic penguins. This colony lives at sea most of the year migrating to Brazilian waters in the austral winter following anchovies and squid who wouldn't then return here to breed. The males arrive first and find nests which are burrows near the beach and

In order to explore the ecological reserve of Patagonia's Peninsula Valds we stayed in nearby Puerto Madryn the town which grew up around a settlement founded by Welsh immigrants in 1865. There are plenty of excursions to the peninsula available from this base as well as diving outings and trips to Welsh teahouses in Trelew or Gaiman approximately 65km south of Puerto Madryn.
