Finally in Malaysia

Phew... That was a long flight. We started from Calgary at 630 am on Friday and got to Ipoh Malaysia at 9pm on Sunday. We are happy that all the bags arrived with us. All family is waiting for us at the parents' house. The first thing we do is go and get some food. Inga is happy to get Ikan Baka. Ikan Baka is a grilled fish with spices. Stingray. David gets his curry noodle soup and we a

Our ferry from Koh Samui was at last a proper car ferry. No more sea sick passengers as we previously had on the smaller ferries. We soon arrived back on mainland Thailand and were taken to the bus station in Surrathani possibly spelt wrong. We decided to go to Hat Yai as it was a fair way south and we've hardly moved geographically over the last 2 weeks and also we were told it has good tra

Good ol fashioned Malay holiday

After another stupidly uncomfortable night outside KL's low cost carrier terminal we peeled ourselves from the benches and hopped on a few buses. Our next destination and last main stay in Malaysia was the small friendly island of Palau Pangkor......A place where the locals go for the weekend or a well deserved break I was starting to regret not straying from the main tourist trail in Malaysia

Malaysian food is famous especially due to its variety as well as the taste. In one word simple irresistible. My brother in law Chee Wei was studying feverishly for his Master in Engineering and his final exam ended on 29th August 2008. They decided to follow me and Mei Yun on a 'eat till you drop' trip to Perak. Perak in English is known as Silver. While we do not produce silver but the food

The mainland of Malaysia receded in the backwash of the ferry as we settled in for the 30minute ride. This would be peanuts compared to the 4 hours bus ride we had just completed from Cameron Highlands to the pier at Lumut. Our destination was Pangkor Island Pulau Pangkor a small green enclave off Malaysia's west coast. The concrete dock led to a reception room which in turn led outside to

We have made it to Malaysia after a somewhat gruelling 12 hour journey from Railay Beach pronounced in a long rolling strangely Jamaican sounding accent to Georgetown in Penang not nearly as long a journey as the travel time would indicate Thai minibus transits are maybe not as efficient as you would hope.We started to notice that things were changing as we got towards the border.
I arrived at the train station just in time for departure. They changed the platform very last minute with a mumbling announcement one cannot quite make out what it's about. I asked the conductor and was able to get on the right train. I always have the fear of getting on the wrong train and find out hours later that I'm in a place far far away from where I want to be. The late night trip was slig

Hello there once againI'm going to start this blog with a little explanation of where I am as not everyone seems to know that much about Malaysia. Malaysia is a federation of 13 states nine of which are monarchies split between Malaya the peninsula in the west and Borneo the island in the east which are seperated by the South China Sea. I'm in Taiping a town in the state of Perak in the

The alarm clock rings its bell and my eyes open up to the last day of being a zoo keeper.
To get to Pangkor island we needed to get a bus from Puduraya station to a place called Lumut on the west coast mainland. From here we had to get a boat. Tim had checked with the buses and we set off at 9aam on a very comfortable air conditioned coach. We had one stop along the way for only a few minutes and sure enough as we were told we arrived in four hours. It was a bit confusing as we wer

The only problem was that we had a huge cup of coffee and coffee makes us wee like crazy...so we spent most of the journey with crossed legs hoping

Due to the winding roads down from the highlands we had a toast to the wonderful drug dramamine before we left. Took the bus down to Ipoh then through Lumut where we hopped on a ferry over to Pulau Pankor a small island off the west coast of Malaysia.
