Nothing too blogworthy in the last six weeks or so as Ive been spending most of my time learning some Spanish. I started with four weeks in Colombia two weeks of school in Bogota before moving along to Cartagena on the Caribbean coast for a couple of weeks. I spent the most recent two weeks in Montezuma Costa Rica for another change of scenery. The good news is that Ive managed to pick

Ideas of mine that have strengthened this year is my confidence my ability to ask questions and having conversations with my classmates and my friends as well. My confidence has increased based on how I received support from my friends and my teachers to keep on trying even though there are times when I want to give up. In the past I didn39t really have that much confidence in

Copan is just over the border in Honduras. Its in adorable little town. Together with 2 canadian boys I roam around in the streets and visit the ruins. Copan is not a very large site but its known for being more artistic. Copan has a basket ball court. It is played 5 against 5 you can use every body part except head feet and hands. If you win the best player gets rewarded with death...so he39

This event led to many individuals losing their lives although many people had fought to the finish and recieved what they truly wanted the most. Ben woke up inspired to go for a run So on his running shoes went he is determined to prove to me how much of a necessity it was for him to bring 4 pairs of shoes and off he went. We went back to the same place we were at yesterday as our omelette was amazing. And half of our group had the same idea as we bum

Hello friends on May 10th I will be embarking on another great adventure This time I will be on a journey to Honduras as part of a giving back initiative with Habitat for Humanity. A lot of people ask why I choose to go outside North America to give Simple. In developing countries government assistance is limited corrupt or nonexistent and many lack formal social assistance programs. In No

Day 26 Relaxing on Roatan Island

We woke up to a beautiful sunny day and got our first look of the resort by daylight. Its so cool Our resort is right on the ocean with a pool area overlooking the sea. We wandered into town and went to a breakie restaurant that had a porch out the back right on the beach. We both ordered omelets which were delicious and freshly squeezed OJ to start our day. The restaurant was owned by this rea

Not an overly exciting blog today sorry guys. It involves a bus a wait at a bus station another bus then a ferry and another bus. Massive travel day however after 12 hours we have arrived at Roatan Island in the Carribean Sea.The day started with us catching the 7am 39chicken bus39 from Copan. A chicken bus is the name given to the old American school buses that for some reason have been

Today we didnt have to meet too early thankfully 8.30am and 39the bridge39. No one knew where the bridge was as our tour leader hadnt elaborated on 39the bridge39. So we all ended up at Welchez Coffee shop for breakie as Jacob had recommended it. It took ages for food to come out cs we all arrived at similar times so we changed meeting time till 8.45am. We both had an omelette and

Day 23 Travelling to Honduras

We were up relatively early this morning for our big travel day out of Guatemala and into Honduras. We were told by our tour guide Jacob that the coffee shop up the road does good breakfasts. What we didn39t factor in was the fact that all our tour group were of course going to go to the same place for breaky too. So when we arrived there wasn39t actually much food left and because there

All about the people

After a short delay our water arrived this morning. With all the space cleared brick making began in earnest. Again I felt efficient. I made 30 bricks over the course of the morning. A mason39s helper make 3 lempira per brick. At the current exchange rate I would have earned roughly 4.50 for half a days work. I am not as efficient as one of the standard helpers but you can see how little

Construction delays are universal.

I am a little behind in my blog. Wednesday I hit the wall physically. I worked hard all day and by the time I got back to the hotel I was capable of little more than shower food and sleep. We began our day by building rebar frames to be used in the construction of the roof support around the perimeter of the house. We worked as a group and were quite effective in getting the task done.I moved on

Mud Bricks

I am struggling with the internet connection tonight more than other nights. It has been a long day with lots of hardwork and activities. Our first task on tyhe job site today was mixing pinestraw into mud. We use our legs while wearing way too big rubber boots. Think Lucy and Ethel stopping grapes only a lot harder. I only fell once and did not do a faceplant but caught myself on my hands

First day building

Today was a great day. We went to the build site. We began by introducing ourselves using our very best Spanish to the masons and their helpers. We were then assigned our tasks. Today moving adobe bricks. Approximately 1100 25 pound bricks moved from the brick making area to the building area. Definitely got my workout in today. Other activities included gathering pine straw from the woods and

Easter Sunday in Santa Rosa de Copan

Roosters crowing dogs barking and firecrackers popping. This is how our day began at 430 this morning. Revelers celebrating Easter lit the fire crackers which made the dogs bark and likely had nothing to do with the roosters crowing. However we got up and went to watch the sunrise Easter parade through the streets. We marched along with the residents of the city as the statues of Jesus Mary

Arrival in Honduras

We arrived safely in Honduras. For most of us travel was uneventful. After landing at San Pedro Sula we took a long time to pass through immigration and customs. We met Luis the representative from Habitat Honduras. He is a really nice man with a great sense of humor. We loaded into our mini bus along with our driver for the week. The ride to Santa Rosa de Copan was long. It was interesting t

Mayan Temples

As far as unpleasant cities go Tegucigalpa probably jumps to the top of my list. I just want to get the negativity out of the way first because Honduras the little I39ve seen of it is a beautiful place. But the capital is pretty grim it39s polluted disorientating seemingly very dangerous police are in teams at al times with fully automatic weapons like AK47s and full of horrific tax
