Bobo and the Bats7. Boborsquos farm Rukuruku Saturday 1st November 2008The journey here was a test of nerves and quite uncomfortable. The scenery however was superb although we only caught glimpses of it out the back of the covered truck since we were seated midway along facing inwards. The truck was rammed with too many people shopping oil cans and a large box of ice. The road was an u

Moturiki School Fair Saturday 25th October 2008Today was probably the highlight of our whole trip so far. We got up chucked the hermit crabs out of our sandfloor bure hut had breakfast and then Elena and Simosi invited us to go with them to Moturiki island where the children go each day to school by boat. On Moturiki there are just three villages no tourist accommodation one school and

Leuleuvia Island Friday 24th October 2008Yesterday we journeyed here to Leuleuvia and are staying three nights until Sunday. The journey was quite an experience. We left Rain Tree Lodge at 8 a.m. and got a bus to Nausori. The bus was full of local children going to different schools so it detoured to different villages this was great because we saw so much of the local culture the kids som

Well we're now back from Fiji and I have just about recovered from my self diagnosed thanks to doctor Lonely Planet Dengue Fever. We only had 2 weeks there definitely not long enough but better than nothing. We spent the first day in Nadi it was really hot and Del had a bit of a hangover from drinking too much wine on the plane there was a change of plane and we ended up in business clas

Levuka funeral

What makes this so cool is that it is legit. There were only about 4 tourists at this funeral and hundreds of Fijians. And of course everyone was super friendly to us as usual. Toby got lots of positive response for wearing a sulu. And we were served a huge plate of venison pork and chicken afterward. No wonder these people are a bit large

Fijian chief's funeral

We have been to countries where the people are friendly but Fiji really takes the cake. The native Fijians always say Bula to us with a big smile. They often shake our hands and ask us where we're from where we're going and if we like Fiji. We spoke to one man who recently got back from Iraq where he served as a soldier for the UN. Another woman spent her lunch break sitting with us to make

Bula from Gun Rock LevukaThe trip got off to a flying start when we lost our bags courtesy of Los Angeles International airport what an inadequate inhumane obnoxious place that is. But who needs stuff anyway Bought some groovy clothes in downtown Nadi then caught the flight to Taveuni. As soon as we stepped off the plane we found we were on Fiji time. Bibi's Hideaway was just what we need

Levuka

hellipOnce we actually did leave we REALLY regretted our decision. In order to enjoy another full day of beach activities on Caqalai we left at 400 p.m. on Monday which was low tide. We hadnrsquot realized exactly what that meanthellip It meant that in order to get to Ovalau a larger island off of Viti Levu we would have to go outside the reef and its calm water. For the locals who

The village in the crater

The transport for Epi's Tour did not leave until sometime after 10am so after breakfast I enjoyed the beautiful morning from the hotel gardens. The only thing to mar it was the smell from Pafco the tuna cannery. In the past two days I've only smelled the smell at the south end of town. Unfortunately it has drifted today. The noise from the cannery is everywhere all the time. There were s

Levuka is every bit as charming and friendly and colonial as the guide books say. I love it here. I've spent my time here exploring the town and relaxing by the seawall. I've gotten used to the sounds from the Pafco tuna cannery but I'm not used to its smells yetYesterday afternoon I sat down on one of the benches along the seawall to try to write in my journal but the scenery was too dist
