We are now at Bowen a very nice seaside town just on the mainland from the Whitsunday islands. We are travelling down to airlie beach tomorrow for Christmas. We have booked to go over to the Whitsundays for 23rd. We hope to visit 3 islands and do a spot of snorkelling. Our trip to Dunk island when we were staying at Mission beach was great only 4 of us on the boat and probably only a few more on t

On my way to Airlie Beach and arriving

Today I left with a rush to the Sunferries Terminal for the Greyhound bus. Fran had forgotten about me And something came in between she said. So I have been waiting for 15 hours on a bench in the shade which was still warm. I wasn't really awake at the time either felt a bit weak. Luckily I was completely packed so I could get in Fran's car immediately otherwise I'd had to take a cab or walk

The scenery as we have been driving south has blown us away. As we head out of Townsville we are flanked on either side of the road with row after row of banana trees and what looks like sugar cane fields. Every so often we happen across roadside stalls selling the freshest and juiciest fruit imaginable and it would be rude not to try some wouldnrsquot it As we arrive at Airlie Beach we are bot

Airlie Beach and the Witsundays

From Townsville it was a fairly short drive down to Airlie Beach so we arrived with plenty of time to pitch the tent and explore. We chose a central campsite a strange place which felt like it was a popular site with tourists back in the early seventies but had since been a bit neglected. Airlie itself was a lively strip of cafes and bars mixed in with travel agents and tourist shops and finishe

The Great Barrier Reef Airlie Beach

It was a 4 hour drive from cape Hillsborough to Airlie and we had heard some not so great things about the place. When we arrived we found the closest caravan park to the city and secured ourself an overpriced pitch right by the main road joy Of all the parks we have stayed in Airlie was the most expensive and the worst facilities but it has the draw of the Whitsunday so it gets away with it

Enjoying the Whitsundays

We have been staying at the Big 4 Whitsunday Park at Cannonvale just out of Airlie Beach. We like staying here because it's out of the busyness but handy to shops and transport and Airlie Beach is the jumping off place to cruise around some of the 74 Whitsunday Islands. Yesterday we picked up a bus at 7am and were taken to Shute Harbour to catch our boat. This firstly took us to Hamilton Island

Day 12 Wed Sep 2Knuckle ReefI feel an obligation to warn other travelers. If someone offers you a tday rip to Knuckle reef in the Whitsundays run like hell in the other direction. Out of practice in relying on my intuition I had let the lady at Peter Pans talk me out of a sailboat snorkeling trip where someone had told me if you don't see at least 200 fish you don't have your eyes open. Whisked up a hill to my hostel where I was shown to my dorm room which smelled distinctly of urine. Gross. I got rearranged to another dorm. The place was ok. I wasn't too thrilled with it. I could tell it was a party pad. So i wander

Setting sail in the Whitsundays

July 7 9We decided to treat ourselves to an adventure outside of the caravan and took to the high seas on a tall ship cruise in the Whitsundays. The ship is called the Derwent Hunter and it had a somewhat chequered history as a drug and weapons transport vessel before it was bought by the current owner and shown that crime doesn't pay tourism does. I'm not really a renowned sea farer but lucki
