Lake district

We are in Beatrix PotterWordsworth country. Beautiful lakes parks and rolling hills and lots of stone cottages. Life in a campervan is interesting people in UK have a different way of holidaying in motor camps. In some of them they even go to the extent of organising Bingo and a singing vocalist to entertain the campers. Shades of Hi de Hi much to our amusement.Met a fellow kiwi last Sun

Keswick

The kids are hooked on exploring by bike especially Lucy she tags on the back of Darrenrsquos bike and has an easy ride. The track we chose was an old railway line so itrsquos nice a flat running along beside the river through a few tunnels and over bridges to a little village with a pub for lunch. Trouble was we were too early for lunch so when we saw a sign to the ancient lsquoStone Cir

Lake District

At the northern end of the Lake District is Keswick pronounced Kesick another pretty town as they all seem to be. I havenrsquot come across an ugly town yet. Walking is the main attraction here too.

Newlands Horseshoe walk

This morning I woke up to the sound of my phone alarm. Usually when this happens in a tent I'm straight up what with hard floors and shiverinducing temperatures not being the best prerequisites to a good lie in. Not so today. The combination of a new tent down sleeping bag and fancy selfinflating mattress back when ah were a laddie we didn't get any o that fancy crap has created the perfe

Day of Rest

This morning we walked two miles from our hostel up to Castlerigg Stone Circle. Itrsquos a stone circle just like Stonehenge only smaller. It was kind of neat to have our literature class in the rocks and to think about how theyrsquove been here even long than writing has. Some people danced in the circle last night there was a full moon and it was May Daymdashhow perfectly pagan but I w

Climb Every Mountain

The hike up Scafell Pike was insanely hard. I didnrsquot even imagine how draining this whole thing would be. I was okay at first because we had a nice level 3.5 mile walk from our hostel to the trailhead. I was snuffling a bit Irsquove had a slight cold since the 28th but otherwise okay. Then we got to the uphill part literally steep stone steps up the mountainside. With my broken arm I

Home Stay Weekend

Home stay weekend is a big part of the Butler experience here in the UK and Ireland according to Ruth Cathy and Katherine the three women who run my program who are kinda like everyone's young chic mothers. As I mentioned before I got my assignment the second or third day I was here and my family seemed like they would be the exact opposite of everything I had written down on my description

Amazing God

Today I got back from a fantastic Church retreat near the Lake District. I met a lot of nice people learned a lot from speaker Pete Gaskell and the Bible and witnessed some of the most breathtaking views I've seen yet. The rugged scenery is absolutely gorgeous this is the reason I decided to study in northern England and I'm so glad that I was able to see this country side my first weekend a

High Winds in the Lake District

Here are some pictures of me trying very hard not to get blown away you wouldn't think from the photos that it's August Charlie Neil and I stayed in Keswick a little town in the NorthWest of the Lake District. We had some good weather our walk up Skiddaw on Sunday was almost hot but Monday and Tuesday brought some very local but very heavy showers. We could see the rainclouds moving ac
