After trying in vain I managed to get rid of my fake 50RMB to the bus station for the ticket to Longsheng rice fields back to where it came from. Juan Juan taught me to check that the notes made a sound when you flapped it and if you werenrsquot sure it was ok to ask for change in 10 and 20RMB notes as they u

Our local guide had a little bit of trouble pronouncing Terraced...	Rice paddies are something nearly universally associated with China and 500 years ago in Longsheng the villagers created a series of terraced rice paddies high atop the hills. Creating a topographical rice landscape that is totally cool. The village of Longsheng is also totally worth visiting. Longsheng is a tangle of steps an

Guilin is a small city of about 670000 people and pretty much seems to be shrouded in a constant gray fogcloud which makes it very humid. Walking around everything is wet even when it hasn't been raining and I don't just mean outside. As we were looking at hotels to find a place to stay we slipped and slid around the lobbies and hallways. We found a place to stay that was reasonable desp

A loud city clock chimed early in the Longsheng air awaking me fifteen minutes before my scheduled 7 am alarm. A quick look around happily revealed nothing much had changed during the night. Yes still in an exceedingly basic hotel room devoid of any sense of homeliness. And yes the city outside still looks gray and as plain as this room. But who cares I wasn't here for the thrilling citys

We bussed from Yangshuo back to Guilin Guilin to Longsheng and up a long rode to the Yao minority village of Dazhai. We stayed in a wooden hotel that night freezing our butts off in the 30 degree cold but it was all worth it to wake up at sunrise the next morning and hike the 4 hours to Ping'An over steeply terraced rice fields. I could not believe the sights and had to ask myself how I was s

Wednesday 6th September 2006Today we visited the Longji rice terraces also called the Dragon Backbone Terraces. The journey on a very mini minibus took around 4 hours. The worst toilet observation happened at the toilet stop on the way. Luckily Irsquod Sam limited my liquid intake and didnrsquot really need to go but was going to go lsquojust in casersquo however the toilets were in t

These beds are like oak boards. Man are they tough on the back. I pulled the sheet back and discovered that I'm sleeping on a just a box spring. What happened to my mattress We have a nice console between the beds that controls our TV room lights and the bed lights. Trouble is the knob on my side controls Ruth's light and the knob on her side controls my light. But at least they work. There

We decided to change hotels because well because of several reasons. It all started with the broken bed lamps. There was only one working bulb in the center of the room. It wasn't too bad during the day but at night it felt like a prison cell. I went down to ask the owner if we could move one room over. She came up to confirm the lights were not working and said she'd send her husband up to
