Coming to Izmir formerly Smyrna is special for me because it is the birthplace of Br William Borrell of our Melbourne Province who died last year. Bill went to the international Juniorate and Novitiate and then following his initial Marist training volunteered to go to China to teach some of the many children of French immigrants during the early and middle parts of the 20th Century.
After breakfast we made ur way slowly by foot and public transport to the airport for a very hassle free flight to Izmir. Drama ensued as the hire car firm told us that the agent had cancelled our booking due to a problem with our payment for which I have a receipt but we could have a car if we paid the directly. I phoned the agent and within ten minutes the misunderstanding between the agent

Another lazey day today with an outing into Izmir to look at some shops and check out the new Marks and Spensers that has just opened here. Had another nice lunch at a cafe and a walk along the sea front. We managed to make some Skpye calls home which was just lovely as the web cams were all working. We spent the rest of the day veging out and we will not be too late to bed tonight as we have a

Day 21 Izmir

We headed out to Sardis today to see some Roman ruins. It was a nice drive out there as the Turks are no where near as crazy as the Egyptians on the road. We stopped first to see the temple of Artemis which was huge and after a picnic lunch supplied by Mummy we then headed over the road to the main complex which was really impressive. The ruins were quite different to the Egyptian monuments tha

We went out to Foa today which is a lovely village that sits right on the Aegean. We had a great lunch in a little restaurant on the harbour and then walked through the town. We then headed off to try and find a place for a swim. We did not realise that here in Izmir beaches are owned and you have to pay to use them. After driving up the coast a bit we did find a nice little spot that we cou

We went out to dinner tonight right on the cordon which is the sea front here at Izmir and watched to sun set as we ate.

Well not such an auspicious day for travel today however we made it here safely. After surviving our last drive throught Cairo with the same maniac driver that took us to Dahab and back we were greeted at the airport with perhaps the biggest shambles that we have seen yet. Cairo airport is definitely something that has to be experienced. If you are ever travelling out of Cairo then we suggest tha

We had to rush to the station otherwise the next bus would have been an hour later. We grabbed a typical Turkish snack of pretzels to eat on the way.We arrived at Troy and to our surprise it was 10ytl for adults but completely free for students of an

TurkiyeTurkey is a backpacker's dream. East meets west in a land where mosques and doner kebabs coexist with internet cafes and night clubs. Barber shops line the streets with the frequency of Starbucks and everywhere you look old men sit idly by playing backgammon and drinking Turkish tea. Turkey's geographical history matches up with any as numerous huge civilizations have laid claim to th

Izmir and Ephesus

The ship docked in Izmir Turkey aka Smyrnia and we walked off the gangway and into Asia. We boarded a bus for a tour to ancient Ephesus about an hour away. It was surreal to be walking where Paul walked and to be experiencing the city that has been the setting of so many sermons over the years. My Mom and I had both made a point of reading the book of Ephesians before going. It was strange
