Swimming the Amazon

We have been in the Brazilian Jungle about 3 hours from Manaus for the last three days. It took two boat rides and two vehicle rides to get here. There is no cell signal or Internet. The only electricity is by generator. We found a guy named Vincente Thomas through Lonely Planet he was listed under Manaus jungle trekking and he met us at the airport in Manaus. He delivered us to a floating

Actually I've been having quite a few accidents recently. But ill get on to that in a bit.On 24th September we flew from Cartagena to Leticia a teeny weeny town in the far south

Manaus The heart of the Amazon

So our boat to Manaus was a completely different experience to the first time around but again we had to sleep three nights on the boat. Although the first night we were docked and had the boat to ourselves. The captain agreed that we could sleep overnight which saved us finding accomodation for the night. When we woke up after our first night we thought the boat would be crammed with hammocks lik

Amazon Days 45

What a nightWe had to get into our hammocks as soon as it got dark. Above the sounds of the ever present insect noise the first things to hear was the frogs. This carried on for a couple of hours and then partway through the night there was strange sound like a hoarse lion. Rubens said that this was a jaguar this made my night as they are very rare. Then around midnight the howler monkeys s

Manaus Day 2After a good but hot nights sleep we headed off for a trek through the jungle the heat was incredible you just had to step outside and you were covered with a sheen of sweat as a result there as no point taking a shower also the showers were full of mosquitoes so it was more trouble than it was worthThe size of Amazonia is mind boggling I was only restricted to one small part and

Up the Amazon

We should have first met the Amazon rainforest from the window of our bus on the way from Cuaba the Porto Velho but all we saw was cows Miles and miles of cows. The road we were travelling along was only paved in the 1980s the improved access led 350000 people to flood into the area grabbing land and clearing 20 of the forest in Rondonia state. Next hop was a flight to Manaus the city at the

The Monkeys Are In The Jungle

Manaus has put the smile back on our faces There's not much to do in the city itself but it's pretty cool anyway. All around the city is the reason for being here the Amazon jungle. We're on a 3 day 2 night trip and it's awesome It's interesting as soon as you leave the dock in Manaus two rivers that come from different directions are different colours one is black the other a kind

Manaus The Amazon

We left Paraty feeling very relaxed and looking forward to heading into the jungle to see a bit of wildlife. We were a bit cautious having heard that Manaus can be a minefield for trying to book tours without being ripped off. I arranged a room through a hotel website but told them not to bother with a taxi pick up. After 6 hours by bus to Sao Paulo then bus to airport and finally the 4 hour flig

Greetings from the final South American County I will visit on this trip Brazil. I have now just over 3 weeks in South America and given that Brazil is the largest country on the continent its going to be a rushed highlights package for me as I hightail it down to Sao Paulo to fly to Canada. Yesterday I flew from Tabatinga on the Brazillian side of the Brazil Colombian border to Manaus deep in

September 2002 Waking up with a mosquito net around your bed isn't the most ideal mornings for most of us but then again it's better than the alternative hundreds of mosquito bites all over your body. Unless of course you end up like one of the girls Kelly. Mosquito nets may keep most of the little pests out but what happens when a few get inside...all they have left to feast on

The Amazon River

THE AMAZONThe Amazon River is big. Really big. The distance from one side of Brazil to the other is more than the distance from Brazil to Africa So just what might you ask were we thinking when we decided to cross its entire length by slow boat And not even a luxury boat but a filthy boat full of locals who don't know what the word 'soap' means. Even the Lonely Planet guidebook calls thi

We stayed in Belem for 2 nights to recharge our batteries after the marathon 28hr bus journey from Fortaleza. Manaus which is the basin for the amazon river can only be reached from the south by boat. The road networks arnt extensive enough the river is the highway of travel. Like i was saying we woke up early to c

Arrived in Manaus at 2.00am. I didnt particularly want to hang around here as I had visited the Amazon before and was keen on getting my way to Venezuela ASAP. We hung around the airport for a bit then got a bus with a friendly tourist information guy. He pointed us in the direction of the main bus terminal so we made our way there as I belived there to be an early morning bus.It turned out t
